UPDATE: Paris, France- Five more arrested in Louvre heist investigation as stolen crown jewels worth $102M still missing

Paris, France – Five more suspects have been arrested in connection with the daring daytime heist of the French crown jewels from the Louvre Museum, French investigators announced Thursday, though the priceless treasures remain missing.

Police carried out the arrests in separate operations across Paris and neighboring areas, including the Seine-Saint-Denis region, prosecutor Laure Beccuau told RTL radio. The identities of the suspects have not been released.

One of the newly arrested individuals is suspected of being part of the four-person team that stormed the Louvre’s Apollo Gallery in broad daylight on Oct. 19, stealing jewels valued at 88 million euros ($102 million) in less than eight minutes.

“Searches last night and overnight did not allow us to find the goods,” Beccuau said.

Two other members of the team were arrested Sunday and given preliminary charges Wednesday of criminal conspiracy and theft committed by an organized gang. Beccuau said both have at least in part recognized their involvement in the heist.

One suspect, a 34-year-old Algerian national living in France since 2010, was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport attempting to flee to Algeria on a one-way ticket. He lived in the northern Paris suburb of Aubervilliers and was previously known to police for traffic violations. His DNA was recovered from a scooter used in the getaway.

The second suspect, 39, was arrested at his home in Aubervilliers. He was known to police for multiple prior thefts. Investigators matched his DNA to a glass display case that held the stolen jewels, as well as to items the thieves left behind, the prosecutor added.

The thieves used a basket lift to scale the museum’s exterior, forced open a window, and used cutting tools to open display cases in the Apollo Gallery. They escaped with eight historic pieces, including:

– A sapphire diadem, necklace, and earring set linked to Queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense

– An emerald necklace and earrings belonging to Empress Marie-Louise, Napoleon’s second wife

– A reliquary brooch

– Empress Eugénie’s diamond diadem and elaborate corsage-bow brooch

Eugénie’s emerald-encrusted crown – set with over 1,300 diamonds – was later found damaged but recoverable outside the museum.

Louvre Director Laurence des Cars acknowledged a “terrible failure” in museum security. However, Beccuau said there is no evidence the theft was an inside job.

In a direct appeal to those holding the missing jewels, Beccuau on Wednesday night warned they are “unsellable” due to their historical significance and urged their return.

PRESS RELEASE- Lehigh Acres, FL- Jewel Thief Sentenced to Life in Prison.

Lehigh Acres, FL- This morning, jewel thief Juan Antonio Manresa Leyva, 55, was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to life in prison for an elaborate jewelry store burglary in Lehigh Acres. He was convicted of Grand Theft Over $100,000, First Degree Burglary Causing Damage Over $1,000, and Possession of Burglary Tools, following a trial in September.

The defendant has an extensive criminal history of gem and jewelry heists along the East Coast of the U.S., as well as crimes across the country. He was part of a crime ring that targeted jewelry stores and pawn shops. They would commit the crimes in the same way it was done in this case, by cutting a hole in the roof, disabling alarms and cameras, and using torches to access the safe.

Deputy Chief Assistant State Attorney Abraham Thornburg and Circuit Court Chief Assistant State Attorney Stephanie Russell prosecuted this case involving the burglary of a jewelry store in Lehigh Acres on February 11, 2024.

The crime started in the overnight hours as the defendant and two other men gained entry into the building, by cutting through the roof. They cut through many layers of the wall, including the HVAC system and duct work. They then gained entry to the room that contained a giant safe and broke into the safe with a cutting torch. They pulled jewels out of the safe and tried to flee as law enforcement arrived. The store owners had seen activity on a security camera, that the thieves missed, and called 911 as the heist was in progress.

Lee County Sheriff’s Deputies, utilizing infrared cameras on a helicopter, captured the defendant, hiding in a nearby wooded area, after jumping off the roof.

The defendant was previously convicted in a RICO conspiracy case out of Clay County, Florida and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. He was released in 2020 after serving more than 9 years. That case consisted of 21 jewelry stores and pawn shops that were burglarized in Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Connecticut. Upon release he committed burglary and grand theft in Sarasota County and was convicted of the crimes. He was released from prison in that case in August 2023. He committed these new crimes here in Lee County, six months after being released from prison.

Due to today’s sentence, he will now serve the rest of his life in prison.

Pairs, France- Suspects arrested over brazen jewel theft from Paris’ Louvre museum.

Police have arrested suspects in connection with the theft of France’s crown jewels from the Louvre museum, just as one attempted to leave the country, the Paris prosecutor’s office said.

Thieves last week targeted the Louvre’s Apollo Gallery in a brazen daylight raid, fleeing with jewelry worth tens of millions in a matter of minutes.

Scores of investigators have been involved in chasing down those suspected of the heist, which Louvre director Laurence des Cars called a “terrible failure.” Last week, des Cars admitted to the French Senate that no security cameras were monitoring the gallery’s second-floor balcony when the thieves broke in using an angle grinder.

French media first broke the news of the arrests, with CNN affiliate BFMTV reporting that two men in their thirties and known to police were detained on Saturday evening local time.

Authorities were able to track down the individuals after analyzing more than 150 samples of DNA left at the scene, BFMTV reported. Both men are from the Parisian suburb of Aubervilliers, where one of them was arrested, it added, while two others suspected of being involved in the heist remain at large.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that “one of the men arrested was preparing to leave the territory from Roissy airport,” also known as Charles de Gaulle airport, near Paris. BFMTV reported, citing sources, that he was arrested during a passport check before he could board an evening flight to Algeria.

The stolen jewels – comprising nine items including an emerald necklace set among more than 1,000 diamonds gifted by Napoleon to his second wife – were not recovered when the two arrests were made, BFMTV said.

France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez congratulated the investigators for the arrests, who he said “have worked tirelessly, as I asked them to, and who have always had my full confidence.”

Thieves raided the Apollo Gallery on the Louvre’s upper floor last weekend, which houses the French Crown Jewels. They used a truck-mounted ladder to gain access to the gallery, one of the most ornate rooms in the museum, through a window.

In the course of a seven-minute heist, they broke into two high-security display cases and stole nine items, according to France’s culture ministry. Among the items taken was a diamond and sapphire jewelry set including a tiara and necklace worn by Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense.

The jewelry taken from the museum is estimated to be worth 88 million euros ($102 million), Beccuau previously told French radio station RTL. Around 100 investigators have been involved in the manhunt to track down those responsible for the heist, she said.

Following the daylight robbery, French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin admitted that the heist exposed security failings at France’s most famous museum.

“One can wonder about the fact that, for example, the windows hadn’t been secured, about the fact that a basket lift was on a public road,” he said on France Inter radio. “What is certain is that we have failed.”

Paris, France – Where the jewels stolen from the Louvre Museum might end up.

NEW YORK (AP) — Just days after a stunning heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris, speculation is growing around where the lavish, stolen jewels that once adorned France’s royals might end up.

A handful of experts warn that the artifacts valued at more than $100 million (88 million euros) could soon — if not already — be melted or broken into parts. If done successfully, some say those smaller pieces could later go up for sale as part of a new necklace, earrings or other jewelry, without turning too many heads.

“You don’t even have to put them on a black market, you just put them in a jewelry store,” said Erin Thompson, an art crime professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. “It could be sold down the street from the Louvre.”

Thompson and others say that this has become increasingly common with stolen jeweled and metal goods, noting that it’s a way thieves can try to cover their tracks and make money. It’s not like someone could publicly wear one of France’s Crown Jewels stolen on Sunday Ã¢â‚¬â€ and finding a market to sell the full artifacts would be incredibly difficult after “everyone and their sister” has seen photos of them over the last week, said Christopher Marinello, a lawyer and founder of Art Recovery International.

The jewels may be hard to monetize

“By breaking them apart, they will hide their theft,” Marinello said, adding that these items could become even more “traceless” if they’re taken out of France and through jewel cutters and robust supply chains in other countries.

Still, such pieces are often sold for a fraction of the value of what was stolen — due to their smaller size, but also because melting or breaking down high-profile items removes the historical worth.

It isn’t a simple process.

“The real art in an art heist isn’t the stealing, it’s the selling,” explained Robert Wittman, former senior investigator of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s art crime team. Wittman, who has since formed his own private practice, said that the individuals behind such heists are typically “better criminals or thieves than they are businessmen.”

Unlike others, Wittman is skeptical about Sunday’s thieves successfully monetizing the artifacts they stole from the Louvre — which include an emerald necklace and earrings, two crowns, two brooches, a sapphire necklace and a single earring worn by 19th-century royals. He notes the gems may still be identifiable by their clarity, for example, and gold that was refined when the pieces were made hundreds of years ago is not as pure as what’s typically in demand today.

“Because of what they are, there’s really no point destroying them,” Wittman said, while pointing to the risks of selling such high-profile stolen goods.

Scott Guginsky, executive vice president of the Jewelers’ Security Alliance, a nonprofit trade association focused on preventing jewelry crime, also notes the age and quality of the artifacts’ diamonds. He suspects they’re probably not graded.

“It’s not something that you can move on the open market. It’s nothing that can go through an auction house,” said Guginsky, who used to run the New York Police Department’s organized theft squad.

Given the amount of preparation that the thieves likely put into this, Guginsky believes they have a plan for selling the jewels, even if they might first decide to “sit on” the jewelry and wait out suspicion.

“I can’t see them stealing it without having an idea what they want to do,” he said. “There’s always a person willing to buy stolen jewelry. No matter what it is, somebody will buy it.”

Sara Yood, CEO and general counsel of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, notes most jewelry businesses implement anti-money laundering programs and look out for red flags like unusual orders, repeated purchases and requests for secrecy.

Still, she and others say the age of some jewels — if broken down effectively — could actually make it harder to track. Newer gemstones, for example, sometimes carry a laser inscription inside that can be evaluated in a lab. But “because these are historical pieces, it’s rather unlikely that it has those identifying features,” noted Yood.

Experts like Thompson say bigger gems can be recut to a point that they’re unrecognizable. A challenge is finding people who have the skill to do that and don’t ask too many questions — but it’s possible, she said.

Whether the people behind Sunday’s heist had those contacts or certain buyers lined up is unknown. But it’s important to also note that “the guys who actually enter the museums are usually all hired hands, and they’re almost always caught in these cases,” Thompson added.

Chances of recovery look dim

She and others say that museums have increasingly faced a rash of similar thefts over recent years. Thompson notes that stealing from storage can go undetected for longer: the British Museum in London, which has accused a former curator of stealing artifacts and selling them online, is still trying to recover some of the 2,000 items stolen.

Some past thieves have made ransom demands for stolen artwork overall, or wait for a potential “no questions asked” reward from an insurance company — which can amount to about a 10% cut for some insured pieces in Europe, Thompson says. The jewels stolen from the Louvre Sunday, however, were reportedly not privately insured.

Sometimes government offers of a reward for information about a high-profile heist can also quicken the investigation, although the French government has yet to publicize such an incentive. If that changes, or promising leads are uncovered from the evidence left behind at the Louvre, experts like Wittman note it could increase the chances of recovering the artifacts.

Still, as more time passes, others feel that the fate of finding the historic jewels looks dim.

“I think they’re going to catch the criminals,” said Marinello. “But I don’t think they’ll find them with the jewels intact.”

Wheat Ridge, CO- Two men convicted in Wheat Ridge jewelry store owner’s death sentenced to lengthy prison terms

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — Two men who were found guilty of killing a Wheat Ridge jewelry store owner have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms, the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Charles Shay and Michael James McCormack robbed Peter Arguello’s store, Peter Damian Fine Jewelry & Antiques, on November 29, 2023. During the robbery, Arguello was kidnapped, assaulted and fatally shot by Shay, according to the DA’s office.

Court documents revealed surveillance video from inside the shop captured the shooting and showed a suspect trying to handcuff Arguello. The store owner resisted, and Shay shot Arguello three times, according to court documents.

In August, a Jefferson County jury found Shay guilty of 10 counts, including first-degree murder. The DA’s office said Shay was also determined to be a habitual criminal under Colorado law, having six prior felony convictions.

Shay was sentenced on Sept. 10 to life without the possibility of parole plus 120 years.

McCormack, meanwhile, was convicted by a separate jury of five counts, including felony murder and aggravated robbery. He was sentenced Monday to 75 years in prison.

“Peter Arguello was an innocent victim and a beloved member of this community whose life was stolen in a senseless act of violence,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Chandler Grant said in a statement. “These sentences bring accountability, honor the strength of his family and community, and reflect the tireless work of our law enforcement partners to ensure justice for Peter and his loved ones.”

Detroit, MI- Men Who Posed as Utility Workers Found Guilty in Jeweler’s Murder.

Detroit, MI- The two men accused of posing as workers for a local utility company in order to gain access to a jeweler’s home and then murdered him have been found guilty.

Jurors in Oakland County, Michigan, returned guilty verdicts against 38-year-old Carlos Jose Hernandez and 40-year-old Joshua Zuazo, both of Dearborn, Michigan, last week.

According to the Oakland County prosecutor’s office, the crime began unfolding on the night of Oct. 10, 2024.

Prosecutors said Hernandez and Zuazo came to the home jeweler Hussein “Sam” Murray, owner of Gold & Glitter Jewelry, shared with his wife, Linda Murray, dressed as workers for DTE Energy, a local electricity and gas company.

Outfitted in fluorescent vests and masks, they claimed they were checking for gas leaks, but it was actually a “targeted and very well-planned” attack, Assistant Prosecutor John Pietrofesa said at trial, as Hernandez had come into Hussein’s jewelry and pawn shop before and asked to meet the owner.

Hussein and Linda did not let Hernandez and Zuazo into their home that night, but the men returned the next day and were permitted entry.

According to the prosecutor’s office, one of the men showed the couple a piece of paper purportedly from DTE, which Murray signed before leading them to the basement.

Hernandez and Zuazo later came back upstairs without Hussein. They then bound Linda with duct tape and beat her while demanding to know the location of the safe, money, and jewelry.

According to evidence presented at trial, Hernandez had been texting with his wife about getting enough from the robbery to buy a house, but what the two men ultimately left with was Linda’s phone, her Apple Watch, some costume jewelry, and the keys to her SUV, Linda testified.

San Ramon

SAN RAMON, Calif- Armed Suspects charged in San Ramon jewelry heist could face harsher punishment for repeat offenses: DA

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KGO) — Three of the seven suspects arrested in the San Ramon jewelry heist are facing serious felony charges, the Contra Costa District Attorney’s office announced.

The three charged, so far, are a 31-year-old and 19-year-old from San Francisco, along with a 27-year-old from Vallejo.

“Our communities deserve safety from conduct like the audacious daylight robbery in San Ramon,” said Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton. “Thanks to the excellent investigative work by the San Ramon Police Department, these defendants will face significant punishment for the offenses they committed.”

Each of the three men charged are facing 13 counts of second-degree robbery.

Prosecutors are adding conspiracy charges, alleging that the suspects carried out a series of criminal acts including stealing cars, forcibly entering the store, smashing display cases, and even firing a weapon to escape when the front glass door locked.

“What prosecutors are using the conspiracy laws for is they want the people that are organizing this, that are in the getaway car, that are the planners to face the same sanctions as the people that are carrying it out in the stores,” explained former Santa Clara County DA Steven Clark.

“What you’re seeing now is prosecutors trying to educate the judges and saying, look, these are no longer just theft crimes.”

Under Proposition 36 just passed at the end of 2024, the suspects could also face enhanced penalties. The voter-approved measure allows for tougher sentencing for repeat offenders who commit serious or violent felonies. The value of stolen merchandise also totaled more than a million dollars.

“Prop 36 is designed for this kind of activity,” said Clark. “They’re not just impulsive kids committing theft. I think that’s the education that prosecutors are sending to the court system and also to the community. And they’re listening to community members saying, look, this has got to stop.”

ABC7 News investigated the suspects’ histories by combing through court and jail records. The 27-year-old suspect had previous cases in Solano and Alameda County. In Alameda County, court records revealed he had faced at least two second-degree robberies in the last five years, but was never convicted for them.

“What you’re seeing is the actual record of this individual that they pled to a lesser charge, and the robbery charge was dismissed,” said Clark.

The suspect was also out on probation while committing several crimes, according to those records. Clark believes there is now a shift in how seriously retail crimes are being taken.

“It is such a pervasive problem, and it’s not a good look for the state of California to have these kinds of videos all over the country showing rampant retail theft,” said Clark.

SAN MARCOS, TX- Grab and Run turns into Armed Robbery with a Firearm for Jewelry Store Employees.

San Marcos, TX– On August 7, 2025, cameras at the Kings Jeweler in San Marcos captured an employee showing a costumer some pieces of jewelry.

“He saw the pad that was the heaviest, and he said, ‘can I see that I like that chain, show me that chain,’” the owner of Kings Jeweler, Minhaj Baig, said while describing what’s happening in the video.

Baig explained that the heavier the jewelry, the more expensive. He said usually his employees only show one item at a time, but this customer was distracting the employee.

“My employee, he showed the chain, and he was just like, oh, show me that, show this, so he could distract my sales rep,” Baig said.

Not a minute later, the man snatched the pad with the jewelry on it. “He just took it and ran off. My employee still ran behind him,” Baig said. A car was waiting for the thief outside. It’s described as a white Kia Forte (possibly 2014–2016 model) with a temporary rear tag and a blue placard on the front plate area.

The employee was hanging onto the car until, “they showed him the gun,” Baig said. The employee let go. The thief took $41,000 worth of jewelry with him.

“We have to take that loss and there is no way to recover that loss,” Baig said. The San Marcos Police Department has figured out who the person is in the video. A warrant has been issued for 34-year-old Yasmany Iglesias Miranda. The owner of the jewelry shop is confident police will find him.

“To catch a thief is very important so that other people know that this can happen to you. Don’t try to do this thing again,” Baig said.

Baig’s message for others who do this sort of thing: “Work hard and make that money rather than stealing it. You will get in trouble later on.”

New York, NY- Tons of cocaine, $100M cash shipped from LA to NYC via luxury flights, feds allege

New York, NY– Five people were arrested Tuesday in connection with a sprawling cross-country drug trafficking organization that funneled some 22 tons of cocaine and over $100 million in cash between Los Angeles and New York, officials with the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

Prosecutors said in a news release that the organizations’ alleged ringleaders, 45-year-old David Rodriguez, aka “Gotti” and “Fat Boy,” of Dumont, New Jersey, and 39-year-old Raymond O’Connell, aka “Sal” and “White Boy,” of Manhattan, have been in custody since 2024.

The two men are accused of purchasing and shipping bulk quantities of cocaine stored at an office fronting as a jewelry store in the California Jewelry Mart in downtown L.A.

Cocaine was reportedly shipped in locked plastic cases concealed in New York City’s Diamond District using what the DOJ described as “high-value freight forwarding companies” that specialize in shipping jewelry, precious metals and fine art.

Once Rodriguez and O’Connell redistributed the drugs to co-conspirators on the East Coast, prosecutors allege, they directed the cash proceeds to L.A., where others in the organization laundered the cash.

Investigators said that more than 800 parcels of coke were shipped from L.A. to New York, an estimated 22 tons of the drug, with an estimated street value of $315 million. More than 500 parcels were shipped from New York to L.A. with an estimated street value of $105 million.

“During the investigation, law enforcement seized more than $2.8 million in cash drug proceeds and more than 725 kilograms (nearly 1,600 pounds) of cocaine, as well as high-end cars and jewelry that defendants purchased using drug proceeds,” the release noted.

Another defendant in the case, 47-year-old New York City resident Ronnell Sweat, pleaded guilty to federal firearm charges in 2024 and is currently serving a 15-year sentence in federal prison, according to the DOJ.

Five additional arrests made Tuesday in connection with the drug trafficking organization, including:

52-year-old Brooklyn resident Jamel Donald Levy
50-year-old Bronx resident Bruce Adams
33-year-old Englewood, New Jersey, resident Cindy Rachel Imbert
30-year-old downtown L.A. resident Nohely Jimenez
42-year-old downtown L.A. resident Lorna “Cookie” Martinez
All three defendants from the East Coast made their initial court appearances on Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, while both L.A. defendants are due to appear in Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday.

Authorities have yet to announce exactly what charges the five defendants arrested on Tuesday are facing.

Rodriquez and O’Connell were charged by federal prosecutors with the following counts:

Engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise
Conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute cocaine
Four counts of distribution and possession with intent to distribute cocaine
Conspiracy to launder monetary instruments and money laundering
“If convicted, Rodriguez and O’Connell would face mandatory sentences of life in federal prison. The cocaine distribution charges carry a 10-year mandatory minimum prison sentence and a statutory maximum sentence of life imprisonment,” the release detailed. “The money laundering-related counts are punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison.”

Investigators are still trying to locate two other defendants charged in the superseding indictment: 52-year-old Daniel “Nice” Vega and 40-year-old Gregory “G” Antonio Benitez, both residents of New York City.

2 suspects killed in ‘gun battle’ with Oakland pawn shop owner after attempted robbery

OAKLAND, CA. — Two people were shot dead and four were injured during a robbery attempt at a pawn shop in East Oakland on Wednesday evening, according to police.

Just before 7:45 p.m., several people were shot in the 7100 block of International Boulevard at the Cash 4 Gold pawn shop, according to the police officers’ union.

According to the preliminary investigation, individuals armed with weapons entered the pawn shop and an exchange of gunfire took place between these individuals and the workers inside the establishment, the department said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located multiple people who were struck by the gunfire. Medical personnel confirmed that one person was deceased. Five other people who were struck by gunfire, including the business owner, were taken to an area hospital, where a second person was confirmed dead, the Oakland Police Department said. The remaining three suspects were in stable condition as of 10:30 p.m., and the owner is expected to survive, according to Oakland Police Officers Association spokesperson Sam Singer. Singer said a robber allegedly pulled a gun on the store owner, who then pulled a gun on the robber and four accomplices. A “major gun battle” ensued, said Singer.

The store owner allegedly shot and killed the two people and wounded the other three. Detectives are conducting a follow-up investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the department said. The Oakland Police Department will be holding a press conference on Thursday.

Milpitas, CA- Armed jewelry store employee thwarts hammer-wielding suspects in Milpitas

MILPITAS, CA. — A family-owned jewelry store in Milpitas narrowly avoided a robbery on Wednesday when an armed employee scared off the would-be thieves.

The attempted robbery involved a large group of people rushing the store, armed with hammers and bags, but they were deterred by the presence of a gun.

An employee of the store was armed with a gun, and managed to scare off the people who tried to storm the store.

The incident in Milpitas mirrors a similar smash-and-grab robbery in San Jose last week, where thieves shoved an 88-year-old shop owner who later had a stroke.

Local leaders and political groups rallied in front of Fine Jewelry in Milpitas, calling on Governor Newsom to fund Prop 36, which they believe would make it easier to prosecute thieves.

Organizers say San Jose is experiencing a crime wave, and there is a lot of unreported crime throughout the Bay Area that needs to be factored in.

The family who owns the Milpitas store did not want to be interviewed but told the Milpitas mayor they were robbed about two years ago in the same way. They plan to reopen the store soon.

San Jose, CA- Elderly California jewelry store owner assaulted by gang of masked thieves during smash-and-grab robbery: ‘Made my blood boil’

San Jose, CA– Shocking surveillance footage shows a relentless gang of masked thieves rushing into a California jewelry store and assaulting the shop’s 88-year-old owner, causing him to have a stroke during a smash-and-grab robbery.

The broad-daylight heist at the Kim Hung jewelry store in San Jose occurred around 2:30 p.m. Friday, the San Jose Police Department told KTVU.

Footage from inside the store shows the robbery being kicked off by an SUV backing into and breaking through the family-run business’s front window as multiple masked suspects dressed in black, with at least one heard demanding everyone to “get the f–k down.”

My friend’s 88 year old uncle’s San Jose Jewelry Store was robbed on Fri 9/5 at 2pm. They ran a truck through the store and then pushed him down. He was injured by broken glass and then had a stroke.

The robbers — most seen armed with axes and hammers — then start bashing in the display cases of the jewelry store and snatching gold and jewelry.

The shop’s horrified 88-year-old owner is seen standing in the back of the store as a few of the thieves head toward him, and then is shoved to the floor by one of the assailants as he frantically tries to stop them from robbing and destroying his business.

Only moments after making entry, a car outside is heard slamming on the horn, prompting the suspects to flee.

The suspects — one of whom was armed with a gun — fled in multiple vehicles, police said.

A friend of the jewelry store’s owner, Chris Moore, said the 88-year-old suffered a stroke after being assaulted during the robbery.

He also shared that the owner was cut by broken glass when he was pushed to the floor.

Moore said the store owner was treated overnight, stabilized by Sunday morning, and released from the hospital.

Damage to the store is estimated at between $50,000 and $100,000, Moore shared, but the shop has not revealed the value of the stolen jewelry.

The San Jose Police Department has launched an investigation into the brazen robbery.

“No arrests have been made,” a department spokesperson told the San Francisco Chronicle. “The robbers are unidentified and remain at large.”

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said the video of the robbery made his “blood boil” and condemned the violent robbery.

“This is appalling. Watching this senior get assaulted made my blood boil,” Mahan wrote in a post on X.

“These people need to face the harshest possible consequences for their actions. I’ve been in touch with our Police Chief … and will be following the investigation closely.”

During a press conference Sunday, civic leaders, community activists and the victim’s family demanded stronger protections for small businesses, Moore posted on X.

“This attack was not just on a store — it was on the dignity of our elders, the safety of our neighborhoods, and the soul of our community. We will not stand by while violence and fear take root,” Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano is quoted as saying.

Sunnyvale, Ca- Police interrupt jewelry store burglary.

Sunnyvale, CA– The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety began receiving reports about 3:45 p.m. on Sunday of a stolen car driving near Mary and California avenues heading south toward El Camino Real, according to a department statement.

Officers were sent to the El Camino Real corridor due to concerns that the reported stolen vehicle could be connected to an attempted robbery, the department said. While in the corridor, officers saw “a caravan of several vehicles” fleeing west on El Camino Real, and began to pursue them.

The pursuit led officers onto Highway 101 into Palo Alto, where the California Highway Patrol took over. The CHP ended the pursuit shortly after.

Cache County, UT- Woman suspected of stealing $5,000 in jewelry from Logan store extradited to face charges.

Cache County, UT– A woman wanted since 2022 for allegedly stealing over $5,000 in jewelry from a Logan jewelry store was extradited Wednesday and is now in the custody of the Cache County Jail, according to Logan City Police Department Lt. Derek Dickey.

Marioara Munteanu, 43, is being held on suspicion of second-degree felony retail theft. Court documents show Munteanu is wanted in multiple jurisdictions on similar charges. According to Dickey, she was extradited from Madison, Wisconsin.

Logan District Court issued a warrant for Munteanu’s arrest on June 2, 2022. According to the affidavit for arrest warrant, Logan City Police Department received report of the theft on May 25, 2022.

The store owner reportedly told police a man and a woman entered the store, stayed for about 30 minutes, then left without attempting to buy anything.

According to the affidavit, the owner suspected the couple may have been attempting to steal jewelry, so employees tried to keep a close eye on them. Surveillance video reviewed after the couple left showed they concealed multiple items and left without paying.

The owner reported six items were stolen, totaling “well over $5,000.”

Investigators distributed footage of the incident to the Jewelers’ Security Alliance network, and a contact identified one of the suspects as Munteanu.

According to a JSA crime alert from Jan. 2022, Munteanu is believed to be a member of an international group of “distraction thieves.” At the time, she was also a suspect in multiple jewelry thefts in Tennessee, Maryland and Georgia.

Munteanu is scheduled to appear before First District Judge Brian Cannell on Wednesday, Sept. 3. She is being held without bail in the Cache County Jail.

Chattanooga, TN- Man pleads guilty to Chattanooga jewelry store robbery with 57-month prison sentence deal.

Chattanooga, TN– A man pleaded guilty Wednesday in Chattanooga’s federal court to a 2021 jewelry store robbery in Hamilton Place mall.

Joshua Lishun Brewer, 29, is expected to serve a 57-month prison sentence for obstructing, delaying and affecting interstate commerce by committing a robbery at Markman’s Diamonds.

“It’s a big decision not only in your life but in the life of the case,” Magistrate Judge Mike Dumitru said from the bench.

The details of the robbery were not discussed in court, but Brewer’s plea agreement detailed the Dec. 17, 2021, incident.

Brewer went inside Markman’s Diamonds with two unknown accomplices and started to yell at those inside to get down, the plea said.

A store employee told authorities she hid underneath a desk and watched as her colleagues were zip-tied at gun point, the plea said.

The woman allegedly told Chattanooga police officers the robbers took her wallet, cell phone and an assortment of jewelry from the store.

When police recovered her phone, it was found to have Brewer’s thumbprint on it, according to the plea.

Markman’s has been the target of repeated burglaries over the decades — one in 1986, 2012 and 2016, according to Chattanooga Times Free Press archives.

Dumitru said he had only met Brewer twice in the worst possible circumstances a person could meet somebody.

Brewer is a young man, who still has time to turn his life around after he serves his sentence, Dumitru said. He wished Brewer luck and said to think of loved ones and the future.

“I hope that your life ends up exactly the way you want it to,” Dumitru said to Brewer.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 9.

Brewer is also facing over a dozen state-level charges including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, theft over $10,000 and false imprisonment, according to the Hamilton County Criminal Court clerk’s office.

Portland, Oregon- Suspects identified, indicted and wanted by police after $3K gold coin theft.

PORTLAND OR– Two women have been identified and indicted for allegedly stealing a high-value gold coin from a Portland business.

The suspects are 30-year-old Flavia Avram of Kent and 29-year-old Ariana Muntean of Lynnwood. Both have outstanding arrest warrants.

According to Portland Police, a tip from FOX 12 during earlier coverage of the case led them to contact Lynnwood Police, who had previously identified the suspects in connection with crimes committed in Washington. This information ultimately led to their indictment in Portland.

According to PPB, in June the two women stole a gold one-ounce Maple Leaf coin worth $3,400 from Portland Precious Metals on Southeast 52nd Avenue. Store owner Michael Kakoullis says the thieves posed as customers and managed to take the coin while distracting an employee.

“They were really good, well planned out. They knew what they were doing; they were coming here for that,” said Kakoullis.

The coin was reportedly taken while the women inquired about other coins. As the employee focused on the merchandise, Kakoullis said one of the suspects palmed the coin while the other blocked the view.

“She was kind of palming that one maple leaf coin, and as she was pulling, her friend put her hand in front to block the view of her, and then it was really quick into her purse,” said Kakoullis.

According to police in Washington, days before the pair walked into Portland Precious Metals, the duo stole a necklace worth nearly $10,000 from a Zales Jewelry store in Lynwood.

On the same day, investigators said the suspects went to a clothing store in Lakewood, where they shorted an employee out of $400 in cash and stole a dress.

According to PPB, on July 6 an officer contacted the Lynnwood Police Department about the case and confirmed the suspects had been identified.

The case was presented to a Grand Jury on July 29, and a true bill was issued, meaning there is probable cause that the women with two counts of felony first-degree theft.

The two suspects remain at large.

Miami, Florida- 72-Year-Old Suspect Charged in 1992 Miami Jewelry Store Murder After Cold Case Reopened

Miami, Florida– After more than 30 years, Miami police have arrested 72-year-old Omar Roy for the 1992 murder of Dionisio Carlos Valladares, the owner of Zamora Jewelry Store. Valladares was found shot to death inside his shop, located at 1006 Southwest 1st Street, on May 6, 1992. Roy has been charged with first-degree murder as the investigation into this cold case gains traction, once again spotlighting an unsolved crime that has lingered in the city’s memory, according to NBC Miami.

The arrest was made possible after a new lead detective was assigned to the case on May 8, and began to methodically review past evidence, finding several inconsistencies in Roy’s previous testimonies. Witnesses had reported hearing a “bang” coming from the store at the time of the murder, and investigators located Roy’s fingerprints in the vicinity—a broken mirror shelf and a telephone, indicating that he was present during the crime

Additional evidence links Roy to the crime scene, including a large quantity of gold jewelry found by the Florida Highway Patrol in his vehicle shortly after the murder. This jewelry was hidden inside a baby diaper in a brown bag—elements that police now confirm were pilfered the day Valladares was killed. At the time, Roy was charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property, adding weight to the case against him. In a statement obtained by NBC Miami, authorities detail these discoveries.

In court, despite arguments from Roy’s attorney that there was insufficient new evidence to substantiate the charges, Judge Mindy Glazer found probable cause based on the affidavit. The defense’s argument that “There’s nothing indicating that Mr. Roy shot the alleged victim,” failed to sway the court. Judge Glazer highlighted an earlier arrest in 1993, where Roy was convicted of manslaughter and served 15 years in prison—a context that could potentially influence the current allegations. Roy is currently being held without bond and is expected to appear before a division judge, as reported by NBC Miami.

As the case progresses, the public’s attention has been drawn not only to the past but also to the image of the accused. A mugshot of Omar Roy, taken yesterday, shows the face of a man now entangled in a legal battle decades in the making. Details of his arrest, such as his height, weight, and the specifics of the charges—murder in the first degree and robbery—are listed on the Miami-Dade County mugshot website.

Cedar City, Utah- Jewelry store owner chases after suspected burglars; 1 arrested and charged.

CEDAR CITY, UT — One of two men believed to have stolen $70,000 worth of jewelry in Cedar City was arrested Sunday after the store owner chased after him.

Eric Drexel Resma, 47, was arrested and charged Monday in 5th District Court with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and theft, second-degree felonies; causing property damage, unauthorized possession of property and failing to stop for police, third-degree felonies; drug possession and failing to stop for police, class A misdemeanors; and having burglary tools and drug paraphernalia, class B misdemeanors.

The search continued Monday for the second man who police say was involved in the jewelry store burglary with Resma, but got away.

Two men drove up to Clark and Linford Jewelers, 83 N. Main, in an Acura RDX about 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle license plate was covered by a pair of underwear, a police booking affidavit states.

One of the men entered the store after breaking the glass front door.

“The unknown suspect has a crowbar-type tool on him, which he uses to break into one of the display cases. He immediately begins to place the jewelry inside a military-style camo backpack,” the affidavit states.

The store owner, however, lives in an apartment above the business and went downstairs after hearing the glass break.

“He confronts the suspect and is hit with the crowbar-type weapon and thrown to the ground. The owner gets back up and is hit again. The store owner ran to the driver’s side of this vehicle to try and identify the driver. He leaned into the vehicle, and the driver began to drive away with him still leaned into the vehicle. The store owner was able to free himself from the vehicle as it sped away,” according to the affidavit.

The owner then got into his own vehicle and followed the burglars.

“He was able to catch the suspect vehicle going south on I-15. He followed the vehicle, waiting for law enforcement to arrive and assist. While following the suspect vehicle, he witnessed the suspects stop briefly and drop the camo backpack out of the car,” the affidavit states.

The owner followed the men until they crashed on a frontage road in the Pintura area, police said. The men ran, and Resma was caught a short time later after trying to hide in nearby bushes, according to the affidavit.

Jewelry with the price tags still attached was recovered from both the discarded bag and inside the wrecked vehicle.

“The amount of jewelry stolen is estimated to be about $70,000. The damage to the front door and jewelry display case is estimated to be above $1,500,” police said.

The arrest report does not say where Resma is from, but notes that he “drove across three states to commit these felonies.”

Police say the second thief was last seen wearing a dark-colored hoodie and a mask.

“Residents in the Pintura area are urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity,” Cedar City police said.

Anaheim, CA- Jewelry store owner scares off mob of thieves by firing warning shot.

Anaheim, CA- The attempted robbery happened at Al-Amira Jewelry on July 17. The owner told FOX 11 that it was close to closing time, when five cars pulled up to the front of the store.

Security camera footage showed about 20 people piling out of the cars and mobbing the store’s entrance. Some of them had sledgehammers and pickaxes and started smashing the door.

Seconds later, though, the group scattered, got back into their cars, and they all drove off.

Video from inside the store showed the other angle. When the people inside saw the thieves, they ran behind the counter. Several came back out to the front, armed. That’s when the owner fired one shot.

What they’re saying: The store’s owner said he thinks the group was watching the store. He said the group moved in just several minutes after one of the last customers left the store.

The owner said he heard a loud noise, and when he looked at the door, he saw “many people. I can’t count it.”

“Then I have to defend myself and my store and my employees. I take my gun, I shoot one bullet, I scare him (the person at the door), he moved and the problem is done,” the owner said.

The owner said that some of his family members were in the store when the group rushed the door.

“Every single one of them was covered in black, head to toe,” said Mohammad Abuershaid, an attorney for the jewelry store.

“Everybody should be vigilant and careful,” said Mohammed Kahn, a customer. “If they notice anything suspicious, they should speak up and report, so everyone is safe.”

For 30 years, Mahmud Salem has owned Sahara Falafel, a popular restaurant near Al-Amira Jewelry. He says he has never seen anything like this here before.

“It was like a movie,” said Salem. “It’s so sad. People are hungry and looking for bigger stuff [to steal].”

The owner’s lawyer told FOX 11 that the store has had one similar incident before, but the thieves couldn’t get into the store then either.About a month ago, another jewelry store across the street was also targeted by thieves. In that case, crooks drove a vehicle through the front of Besan Jewelry. The robbers then took jewelry estimated to be worth more than $3 million.

NORRISTOWN, PA- ‘Smash-and-grab’ Collegeville jewelry store heist lands getaway driver in prison

NORRISTOWN, PA — A Philadelphia man is on his way to prison for being the getaway driver for his conspirators during a “smash and grab” burglary at a Collegeville jewelry store that netted them more than $380,000 in merchandise.

“This was a smash-and-grab jewelry heist. That’s exactly what it was, breaking and smashing and taking all the jewelry they could get. Make no mistake, this is a very serious crime,” Montgomery County Judge Steven T. O’Neill said as he sentenced Lawrence L. Harper III to 2 to 5 years in a state correctional facility in connection with the 4:34 a.m. Feb. 9, 2024, break-in at Sabre’s Fine Jewelry store in the 400 block of East Main Street in Collegeville.

O’Neill said Harper and his three alleged conspirators saw the small business in a small town as “a big score.” “This was a community that was violated as well,” said O’Neill, referring to the impact that such crimes have on the small business community.

The owner of the store told the judge she worked hard her entire life to run the family business and feels the impact of the burglary each and every day. “In less than five minutes, my world was shattered. My store was destroyed, product was taken,” the woman told the judge.

“I heard the emotional pain,” O’Neill responded to the owner’s statements. Testimony revealed the “smash and grab” burglary resulted in the loss of $384,041 in merchandise and $6,945 in damage to the store for a total loss of $390,986.

The judge said Harper will be responsible for sharing in the payment of the total restitution with his alleged co-conspirators, two of whom have previously pleaded guilty and one who is still awaiting trial on burglary-related charges.

“They really went on a spree of just destroying every display case and taking everything out in trash bags. When the victims came back to their business, they found it in disrepair and absolutely destroyed and really their life destroyed in just a few minutes. Every smashed object, every object taken, made up (the victim’s) life. That trauma really does live with them every day. It was a very significant crime and a huge impact on the victim and the community,” said Assistant District Attorney Christian Garfield Taffe, who argued for prison time against Harper.

“There should be a strong sentence to show that you cannot do something like this to a local business,” Taffe added. While Harper was the getaway driver, he was an accomplice to the three others who allegedly entered the store and stole the goods, prosecutors and the judge indicated.

“He played a vital role in making this happen,” Taffe said. “That’s what the law reflects, that when you are an integral part and you’re helping a crime be committed, you’re an accomplice to it and you face the same liability that they do.”

“Every piece is instrumental. It’s not spur of the moment, it’s planned,” O’Neill said. Harper, 36, of the 4200 block of Orchard Street, Philadelphia, showed no emotion during the sentencing hearing but attempted to offer an apology for his role in the crime.

“I wasn’t thinking right. I had a lot going on in my head. It wasn’t right. I just want to say I’m sorry,” Harper said. Defense lawyer George Griffith Jr. argued Harper’s poor decisions were fueled by a drug addiction.

“Drug addiction, that is why Mr. Harper is here,” said Griffith, maintaining that the 15 months Harper has spent in jail while awaiting court action probably saved his life, adding, “that’s a sad statement.”

Griffith asked the judge to give Harper credit for the time he already served in jail and allow him to begin working “to get back on his feet” so he can begin paying his share of the restitution.

Two other men, Dartanuall Lomar Cox, 34, of the 5400 block of Market Street, Philadelphia, and Donte Stanley Solomon, 33, of the 7700 block of Chelwynde Avenue, Philadelphia, each previously pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft by unlawful taking and are awaiting sentencing hearings.

A fourth man linked to the crime, Lawrence Jainlett Dass, 27, also of Philadelphia, is awaiting trial on burglary-related charges. The investigation began at 4:34 a.m. when Collegeville police responded to a commercial burglar alarm at the jewelry store, according to a criminal complaint filed by Collegeville Police Officer Andrew Sohl and county Detective Sean Franchini.

Video surveillance depicted three males entering the store after shattering a window. One of the males used a hammer tool to break display cases and the other two men removed the jewelry and placed it into trash bags, according to court papers.

Officers from Lower and Upper Providence townships assisted. A short time later, a Lower Providence officer observed a Nissan Maxima with multiple subjects inside and stopped in the middle of the roadway where cars cannot park, at Park Avenue and Chestnut Street, just a short distance from the store.

As police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the Nissan fled and officers could see the occupants “tossing jewelry from the Nissan Maxima as it was driving away,” according to the arrest affidavit.

A police-involved pursuit was initiated and traveled through Collegeville, Lower Providence and West Norriton. The suspects eventually turned off the vehicle’s headlights and the pursuit was terminated in West Norriton.

Detectives subsequently traced the Nissan to Harper. Within hours of the burglary, Harper allegedly falsely reported his vehicle stolen to Philadelphia police, court papers indicate. On Feb. 13, Harper called Philadelphia police to report he had located his vehicle on North 12th Street in Philadelphia and claimed he knew nothing about the burglary.

However, detectives reviewed cellphone data that showed Harper’s phone was in the area of the Collegeville store at the time of the burglary and in Lower Providence and West Norriton at the time the suspects were trying to hide and to evade police, according to the criminal complaint.

Authorities analyzed other cellphone data and posts that some of the suspects made on social media sites discussing the sale of the stolen items to eventually link Cox, Solomon and Dass to the burglary, according to court documents.

Detectives determined that some of the jewelry was sold to a Philadelphia pawn shop. Taffe praised the county detectives and Collegeville police who conducted the intricate, time-consuming investigation.

“Nothing gets done without great police work and in this case we had great detectives who were able to find things that really helped us to tie in all the information and that’s ultimately what led to such a favorable outcome for us in making sure we were able to hold the actors accountable,” Taffe said.

Jacksonville, FL- Pawn shop customer shoots at suspects during armed robbery.

JACKSONVILLE, Fl. — Action News Jax spoke with a man who said he witnessed a robbery at a local pawn shop and opened fire on the suspects. Police said three suspects, all dressed in black and wearing masks, entered the Cash America Pawn on Blanding Boulevard and stole $9,000 in jewelry.

Timothy Williams was inside the store on Saturday when it all happened. He said he watched those suspects break the glass on the jewelry counter, while another held the store door open.

“My buddy that was there was like ‘oh my God, I can’t believe this is happening,’” said Williams, referring to one of the employees. “And I was like, do you want me to put a stop to this, because they are coming closer to us and I don’t like this.”

Williams said he drew his concealed gun and shouted at the suspects to stop and get out. “The one guy with the hammer turned to me and raised the hammer and took a step toward me, and I pulled the trigger,” said Williams. “He kind of fell backward, stepped backward into his friend, and the friend dropped the bag that he had.”

Williams said he believed the bullet hit the suspect in the gut, but police did not confirm if anyone was hurt by gunfire. After that, Williams said the suspects ran out of the store and toward a restaurant next door.

“They dropped something in the doorway and another couple of pieces up between that store and the restaurant next door,” said Williams.

Police said another witness pulled his concealed carry firearm and fired one shot as one of the suspects ran in front of the store. Williams said he was glad he could put a stop to it.

“I hope they get caught,” said Williams. “If you are going to play stupid games, you are going to win stupid prizes, and somebody won a 22-magnum bullet.”

Action News Jax reached out to Cash America Pawn for a statement on this and any surveillance video they have. We have not heard back. Police are still looking for those suspects.

Burglary

Canoga Park, CA- Roof top Burglars take off with $400,000 worth of jewelry in Canoga Park theft caught on video.

Canoga Park, CA– A group of burglars were caught breaking into a Canoga Park jewelry store, reportedly getting away with $400,000 worth of jewelry.

It happened Thursday at a store along Sherman Way. The owner said the burglars got in through the roof and ripped out the wires to his security system so it wouldn’t go off.

Surveillance video shows at least one burglar wearing a mask and hoodie eyeing a display counter. The owner said the thieves took about $400,000 worth of jewelry after they cut a hole through a safe.

“From one thing to another, you know, my life savings has literally been wiped out,” said the owner. “So now it’s just starting back from zero and slowly trying to build up what we have to build … I don’t even know if I feel safe anymore.” The owner said he was only partly covered by insurance.

Amber Jewelers in Artesia latest venue robbed in string targeting Indian-owned stores

ARTESIA, Calif. A wave of smash-and-grab robberies is hitting Indian-owned jewelry stores across California, leaving business owners shaken and authorities on high alert.

The latest violent heist happened on July 1 at Amber Jewelers and Watch Palace in Artesia, just before 6 p.m. Surveillance footage shows at least 12 masked men storming the store, smashing glass cases, and grabbing handfuls of gold and diamonds. Three people took cover behind a counter during the chaos.

Investigators say the suspects fled in multiple getaway vehicles. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lakewood Station is handling the case.

This attack is part of a troubling trend. Since May 2024, at least eight Indian jewelry stores across the Bay Area and Southern California have been hit similarly.

In Sunnyvale, just days before the Artesia robbery, suspects targeted a jewelry shop on East El Camino Real. On June 29, around 2:45 p.m., a group rammed a stolen vehicle into the store, then smashed displays with hammers. The heist lasted less than 90 seconds.

The store owner was hurt during the incident and later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety found a possible suspect vehicle, but they ended the pursuit for public safety reasons.

Authorities say this isn’t an isolated incident. Other Bay Area stores targeted include Nitin Jewelers, PNG Jewelers in Sunnyvale, Bhindi Jewelers in Newark, Bombay Jewelry Company in Berkeley, Kumar Jewelers in Fremont, and BJ Jewelers in Dublin. Police have made arrests in two of those cases—at PNG and Kumar Jewelers—but the remaining suspects are still at large.

The July 1 robbery in Artesia is among the boldest yet. A Ring security video shows a group of masked men wearing hoodies and wielding tools rushing the store. Witnesses say as many as 30 people may have been involved.

Another nearby store was also hit at the same time. Both businesses were left with broken windows, shattered glass doors, and destroyed display cases. The next day, plywood covered the storefronts. Store co-owner Freeha said she and her family had never experienced anything like this since opening the store in 1993.

“We were the first ones in this plaza,” she said. “It was very traumatizing for us, and I don’t know how we are going to handle it.”

An office above the jewelry stores also suffered damage. Its glass door was shattered during the robbery. No injuries were reported in the Artesia incident, and police have yet to announce any arrests.

These incidents are becoming more frequent and more violent. On March 30, suspects used a stolen vehicle to ram another Sunnyvale jewelry store. They fled empty-handed after an employee pulled a gun on them.

On June 20, thieves used a stolen car to break into a Dublin store. The owner had removed all merchandise after hearing about a recent robbery in Fremont, so the suspects left with nothing. Law enforcement officials believe organized crime rings may be behind the string of attacks.

Business owners and residents are calling for better protection. Many stores already have security cameras and buzzer entry systems. But in cases like these, those measures are not enough to stop large, coordinated groups.

With millions of dollars in merchandise stolen and damage still being assessed, police are asking the public for help. Victims are left dealing with not only financial losses but also emotional trauma.

Detroit, MI- Two men arrested after armed robbery outside Detroit-area jewelry store, police standoff

Two men were taken into custody after they allegedly robbed three people outside a jewelry store on Monday in Hamtramck, Michigan.

Leon Devonte Richardson and Michael Edward-Martell were arraigned on Thursday on 19 felony charges, including armed robbery, larceny, larceny of $1,000 but less than $20,000, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm. Both suspects received a $500,000 cash/surety bond. They must be on house arrest if released.

Hamtramck police say on June 30, three people were leaving Gold and Glitter Jewelry on Joseph Campau Street when a white Nissan Rogue pulled up beside them. One of the suspects got out of the car and allegedly snatched a chain from one of the victims, police said. The suspect also chased a second victim, who was on crutches, stealing his glasses, and stole a woman’s purse at gunpoint.

Police said officers located the two suspects less than an hour after the robbery, arresting one of them. The second suspect went to a house in Detroit but eventually surrendered after a standoff.

Police said both men are charged as habitual fourth offenders, which carries up to life in prison if found guilty.

Laverne, CA- Suspected burglary crew arrested during attempted rooftop break-in at local jewelry store

La Verne, CA – Seven men were arrested Sunday night after police investigators and multiple local agencies interrupted an attempted jewelry store burglary in La Verne, weeks after the same crew allegedly struck a Glendale business.

Burglary detectives from the Glendale Police Department launched an investigation and, with the help of partner agencies, began tracking the suspects.

On June 29, officers moved in as the suspects tried to break into Rodeo Jewelers on Foothill Boulevard by cutting through the roof. Authorities said the group also used signal jammers and cut wires during the attempted break-in.

Seven of the eight suspects at the scene were taken into custody with help from the La Verne, Claremont and Glendora police departments, as well as deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Those arrested were identified
as Vera Matias, Javier Sepulveda, Luka Pazitiani, Edson Gonzalez, Jose Millafil, Victor Iturriaga Lopez, and Cristian Gonzalez Aburto.

Los Angeles, CA- Burglars cut through roof of El Monte jewelry store, steal $1.5 million in gold and diamonds, owners say

Los Angeles, CA- The owners of an El Monte jewelry store say that a group of burglars stole more than a million in gold and diamonds from their business overnight.

Instead of selling jewelry as planned on Sunday, Rosanna Meza and her family are now sifting through the aftermath of the burglary.

“It was our life … and our dreams,” Meza said. “They took everything from us.”

She says that the crew cut through the roof of their store, Meza’s Jewelry on Main Street, using power tools to crack open their safes before taking off with more than $1.5 million in product, including diamond rings and solid gold chains.

“My brother called me, I was at my house still, and he called me and when he told me … everything went blank,” Meza said.

The crew also cut off the store’s security alarms, taking them with them when they fled from the store. She says that it’s not the first time they were targeted by burglars, referencing a 2023 smash-and-grab robbery in which store employees fought back against a suspect.

This time though, she said things were different.

“These were professionals,” she said. “They cut the internet, the security alarm, the cameras. We don’t have anything.”

This is the latest in a series of complex burglaries at Los Angeles County jewelry stores.

Earlier in June, a crew used a blowtorch to cut through the wall of Encino Jewelry Mart, where five different jewelers work. In May, two different groups burglarized stores in Glendale and Simi Valley by cutting through the roof to gain entry.

Meza said that they have filed a report with the El Monte Police Department, but they’re unsure when they can reopen as they work to repair the damage and count their losses.

Stolen were $100 million worth of gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and luxury watches, in what is considered by the DOJ to be the largest jewelry heist in U.S. history.

The DOJ said the following seven suspects have been charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit theft from interstate and foreign shipment and theft from interstate and foreign shipment:

  1. Carlos Victor Mestanza Cercado, 31, of Pasadena

Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo, Valencia, and Alban are also charged with two counts of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and interference with commerce by robbery (Hobbs Act), as well as additional counts of theft from interstate and foreign shipment, according to the Department of Justice.

On July 10, 2022, several of the suspects scouted the Brinks truck leaving an international jewelry show in San Mateo, California with 73 bags containing millions of dollars of jewely, the DOJ said. The suspects then followed the truck for about 300 miles to Lebec. While the truck was stopped there, authorities said Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo, Valencia, Presilla, Macias, and other co-conspirators stole 24 bags from the Brinks truck.

The DOJ said Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo, and Valencia are also alleged to have stolen $240,573 worth of Samsung electronics from an interstate cargo shipment in Ontario on March 2, 2022. Those same suspects, and Alban, allegedly then robbed a box truck driver of $57,377 worth of Apple AirTags.

Shortly after, the same defendants successfully stole approximately $14,081 worth of Samsung electronics from another interstate shipment in Fontana, according to officials.

If convicted, Mestanza, Padilla, Lugo, Valencia, and Alban would face maximum sentences of 20 years in federal prison for each robbery charge, and all defendants would face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for the theft conspiracy charge and 10 years in federal prison for each theft charge.

New York, NY- Fugitive suspected of choking boss to death with zip ties inside NYC jewelry store busted 8 years later: prosecutors

New York, NY– A fugitive suspected of choking his boss to death with zip ties inside a Tribeca jewelry store more than eight years ago has been extradited back to the Big Apple and charged with the heinous cold case murder, prosecutors said.

Michel Patrick Desalles, now 54 – accused of murdering Omid Gholian, 43, inside World of Gold N Diamond at Church and Duane streets on Feb. 14, 2017 — quickly booked a flight to his native Mauritius to escape the long arm of the law, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said Monday.

Desalles hid out in the Indian Ocean island country until Friday, when officials from multiple agencies caught up to him and brought him back to New York to face justice, prosecutors said.

Desalles was charged with second-degree murder and ordered held without bail, the DA’s office said.

The now-captured attacker is accused of savagely beating his boss and tying two zip ties tightly around his neck, prosecutors said.

Missing Wisconsin mother found ‘alive and well’ after six decades ‘living her life’ happily with new husband and name: ‘Did what she had to do’

The deadly assault happened in the morning, and by the evening, Desalles was already on a flight from JFK International Airport to Mauritius, according to prosecutors.

Meanwhile, Gholian’s family hadn’t heard from him for a few days, and his brother had even filed a missing-person report with the 1st Precinct, police said at the time.

When Gholian’s brother went to the store the next day to look for him, the gate was locked.

Cops then helped him track down a family member who had keys to the shop and were able gain entry.

Inside, they found the lifeless victim lying in a pool of blood in the back, with zip ties around his neck, according to cops and prosecutors.

Gholian, of Marine Park, Brooklyn, had suffered bruising on his eye and a gash on his head, the DA’s office said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMTs.

The city medical examiner’s office confirmed that Gholian’s death was a homicide , caused by “compression of the neck.”

At the time, Fred Laleh, who owns a neighboring shop called Korner Jewelry, told The Post he knew something was wrong when he saw Gholian’s store locked up on Valentines Day.

“I thought it was strange because that is the busiest day of the year for us,” Laleh said.

Laleh said he later spoke to one of the deceased shop owner’s employees who said Gholian dispatched him to take care of business uptown in the Diamond District.

While the employee was on his way, Gholian allegedly called to tell him not to come back to the store.

“We don’t know why he told him not to go back,” Laleh said. “I am still in shock. This is unbelievable.”

The US Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs, the US Embassy in the island nation’s capital of Port Louis, the US Marshals Service and the Office of the Attorney General of Mauritius and the Mauritian Police Force all teamed up to arrest and extradite Desalles, prosecutors said.

dc

Washington, D.C. – Jewelry store owner said he was tied up during Dupont Circle robbery attempt.

Washington, D.C. – The owner of a jewelry store told 7News he was tied up and held at gunpoint during an attempted robbery near Dupont Circle.

The events that followed would lead to a female suspect being shot by Metro Transit Police and a man being taken into custody.

Tan Hoang, the owner of Ideal Cut Jewelers on Connecticut Avenue, Northwest, said Friday started as any other day, but that changed when a worker buzzed two people into the store.

Surveillance cameras captured the two strolling into the shop. Moments later, he said they pulled a gun.

“I saw the gun pointed in my face,” Hoang said. “Then, they pushed us down and tied us up back at the door.”

The terrifying moments happened around 4 p.m. just off a busy D.C. thoroughfare.

“I just told them, get whatever you want, but don’t shoot us,” said Hoang. “We’re just regular people.”

Getting out of that terrifying situation to getting the attention of the police took some bold action by the store owner.

“Both of them tried to get the jewelry in the showcase, so I locked the door and pushed the panic button,” he said. “We have an emergency door out the back. We ran out, and then the police came.”

That’s when Metro Transit Police said one of their officers fired a shot and hit the female suspect in the leg.

Police would spend hours hauling away the last bit of evidence. A motorbike was also taken away from the scene on a tow truck.

Friday night, Hoang worked to clean up his shop and move on.

“It’s a repair shop,” said Hoang. “We’re not a big store. We don’t have very much jewelry in the store, but things like this happen.”

“I have to start again, but what can I do?” he asked.

NASHVILLE, TN – Gun pulled on employees who stop $9K theft at Nashville jewelry store

Nashville, TN – — A Nashville jewelry store staff stopped a robber before they were about to close up shop. However, they told News 2 that it wasn’t the first time they’d been targeted.

On Friday, 38-year-old Joshua Calvo allegedly walked into Peacock Jewelers in South Nashville and told the owners he wanted to sell them a piece of jewelry. Staff told News 2 he had asked them to start a custom-designed piece as a distraction.

They said he came into and out of the store multiple times, and waited until they were about to lock up for the night before pulling out a gun.

“When he tried to pull the gun on us, one of the security guards that he didn’t realize was here went to the front door — preventing him from leaving — and there was another security guard in the back that he didn’t realize was there,” store co-owner Joey Nunley said.

Calvo was allegedly stealing watch straps, the owners told News 2, and he had also slipped a $31,000 one-of-a-kind pendant into his sleeve. Staff members told him to put the gun down; when Calvo turned, a security guard tackled him to the ground and subdued him until he could be arrested by an officer with the Metro Nashville Police Department.

“Had we not had the security here that night, I don’t think we would have made it,” Nunley said. “I think he would have either killed us or worse — put us in a situation where we were locked up in the safe or something where we couldn’t breathe.”

Court records obtained by News 2 showed that Calvo had been arrested for felony burglary in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Calvo has also been repeatedly arrested for theft.

It’s also the second time the 21st Avenue business has been targeted by thieves. In 2021, robbers stole $25,000 in jewelry. That loss wasn’t recovered. However this time, they were able to get the pendant back.

The owners told News 2 they’re working to increase their security measures by installing more panic buttons throughout the store.

“I’m just thankful that no one was hurt and that this individual is now in the hands of the police and it hopefully stays that way for a long time,” Paul Wilson, a co-owner at Peacock Jewelers said.

Calvo has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and theft in connection with this case. The co-owners also told News 2 that they had written the District Attorney’s Office and asked for Calvo to be charged to the fullest extent of the law.

LOS ANGELES, CA- Millions in merchandise taken by burglars who tunneled through concrete into LA jewelry store.

LOS ANGELES, CA– Burglars tunneled through a concrete wall to gain access to a Los Angeles jewelry store, making off with at least $10 million worth of watches, pendants, gold chains and other merchandise, police said. The heist happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Love Jewels on Broadway in the heart of downtown’s jewelry district, according to Officer David Cuellar with the LA Police Department.

Investigators were reviewing security camera footage that shows the suspects entering the store from a large hole they drilled from the property next door, he said. “They tunneled through multiple levels of concrete into the target location,” Cuellar said Tuesday. An unknown number of suspects fled through the same hole and drove off in a late model Chevy truck, he said. The heist wasn’t discovered until store employees arrived for work Monday morning.

Initial estimates are that $10 million worth of merchandise was stolen, Cuellar said, adding that the number could change. The owner told The Associated Press the loss was around $20 million, and that they did not have insurance. No alarms went off and the feed to their in-store security cameras were cut. At the store on Tuesday, workers covered up the hole in the wall with a metal plate, repaired other damage and cleaned up overturned display cases and discarded boxes. Two large safes were broken into, containing all the merchandise they had in the store. Customers and friends stopped by to offer sympathy, with some even asking to purchase items.

Love Jewels’ website advertises items like a 14-karat yellow gold rope chain for $1,200, heart-shaped gold earrings for $200 and a gold cross pendant for $550. Videos on the store’s social media shows glass cases filled with rings, watches and necklaces. Detectives examined the scene for fingerprints and DNA, police said.

Long Beach, CA- Robber Sentenced To 7 Years For $2.6M Beverly Hills Jewelry Heist

LONG BEACH, CA – A Long Beach man was sentenced today to seven years in federal prison for his role in robbing more than $2.6 million in merchandise from a Beverly Hills Jewelry Store in 2022.

Ladell Tharpe, 39, and several other accomplices robbed the Luxury Jewels of Beverly Hills store in March 2022, according to prosecutors.

The 39-year-old, along with Long Beach residents Deshon Bell, 22, Jimmy Lee Vernon III, 33, and an unnamed minor, used sledgehammers and crowbars to break into the jewelry cases at the store.

“Brazen criminal action that directly targets our small businesses in Los Angeles County will not be tolerated,” said Acting United States Attorney Joseph McNally. “The consequences for such action are severe and penalized accordingly, and I want to thank our law enforcement partners for their exceptional and dutiful work during this investigation.”

Prosecutors say the robbery crew took off with at least 19 bracelets, seven pairs of earrings, four necklaces, a pair of obelisks, eight rings, and 20 watches that were valued at just over $2.67 million.

Tharpe posted a photo two days after the crime, flaunting large amounts of cash with the caption “robbery gang,” according to prosecutors. Authorities were further able to tie the men to the crime after finding Vernon’s cellphone at the store, which fell out of his pocket during the robbery, prosecutors said.

Tharpe, who has been in federal custody since March 2023, according to prosecutors, pleaded guilty last September to one count of interference with commerce by robbery.

Vernon has since been sentenced to just under seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of Hobbs Act robbery. Bell, who served as the getaway driver, also pleaded guilty to one count of Hobbs Act robbery but received a lesser sentence of one year and one day in federal prison.

Tharpe, Vernon and Bell have each been ordered by a federal judge to pay $2,674,000 in restitution.

FT. Meyers, FL- 5 suspects in attempted burglary at Fort Myers jewelry store.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Greg Cerio is looking for the suspects responsible for attempting to steal from his store Cerio’s Jewelry in Fort Myers on Cleveland and Colonial.

“It makes me sad. I just I’d like to see them get caught in, you know, get what they deserve,” said store owner Greg Cerio. Five determined burglars can be seen on a video
trying to smash the front door and rip their way into the store.

“It’s still a hit. But, you know, it could have been much worse,” said Cerio. This time, though, they couldn’t get in thanks to the bulletproof doors. The video then shows them running away.

“You’ll see in the video something spooked them, and they all started running really quickly around the building. We do have cameras all the way around the building. So, we caught all of that. And they ran over to this parking lot over here,” said Cerio.

While Greg is grateful the suspects didn’t get inside, he says the damage to the door and window can cost thousands of dollars to repair. “You know, I’d be afraid of what they could do, you know, just smashing things and, you know, could have been much more expensive than it was,” said Cerio.

The five suspects are masked, but Greg believes they are the same suspects behind the other break-ins in the area. “The police told me that these five guys have done this before to other businesses and got away with it and did much. You know, they actually got inside and took, you know, a lot of things. So, you know, here they didn’t but I know other places they did,” said Cerio.

Greg is asking anyone with information on the suspects to come forward and call FMPD. “I know a lot of other store owners. They’re shocked …. They’re really nervous talking about sleeping in their stores at night. It really just it sends a really bad message,” said Cerio.

Westchester County, NY – Sledgehammer-wielding NY crooks who jacked $1.7 million in Rolex watches, jewelry nabbed in NJ.

Westchester County, NY- Two sledgehammer-wielding thugs who helped jack $1.7 million in jewelry and watches — including 70 Rolexes — in a brazen Westchester County heist were nabbed in New Jersey on Tuesday, the feds said.

Kevin Williams, 26, Byron Wilson, 24, and two cohorts drove a stolen dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee from Jersey to the Westchester Square shopping plaza in Hartsdale around 11 a.m. Dec. 16, according to a statement from acting US Attorney Matthew Podolsky of the Southern District of New York.

The criminals, dressed all in black and carrying hammers, stormed a jewelry store there and began smashing display cases as shocked customers and workers cowered in fear, authorities said.

The masked bandits snatched up pricey pieces that included diamonds, rings, necklaces, earrings and luxury watches — including the Rolexes worth more than $1 million all on their own, officials said.

Then, they hustled to their stolen Jeep — with their bags of illicit loot in tow — and hightailed it back to the Garden State, Podolsky said.

nvestigators tracked their cell phones afterward and found that while Wilson returned to their shared home in Irvington, NJ — a city of about 60,000 just west of Newark — Williams took a trip to the Diamond District in Midtown Manhattan.

A few hours later, the poaching pair posed with their co-conspirators for pictures in which they all held fat stacks of cash, the statement said.

Wilson also was busy researching the phrase “hartsdale news” on his phone and reading articles about the heist, including one titled, “Tarrytown Jewelers in Hartsdale victim of robbery in broad daylight,” officials said.

He Googled “tudor geneve watch,” too — apparently to try to learn more about some of the costly items the gang had stolen, the feds said.

But his and Williams’ luck ran out Tuesday when they were collared and charged with two federal counts involving conspiracy to commit robbery.

Each count brings with it a maximum of 20 years in prison.

The pair were set to be arraigned Tuesday in White Plains federal court.

“As alleged, Kevin Williams and Byron Wilson, along with their co-conspirators, carried out the violent robbery of a jewelry store in broad daylight,” Podolsky said.

“Armed with sledgehammers, the defendants smashed their way in and then plundered the store of about $1.7 million in jewelry, diamonds, and luxury watches, all while innocent customers and employees hid for their safety.

“Today’s arrests should make clear that if you commit such brazen and dangerous crimes in this District, we will find you and hold you responsible.”

Atlanta, GA- Tennessee jewelry stores targeted in $1.7 million heist spree: trio sentenced.

Atlanta, GA– Three men who orchestrated a multi-state jewelry store burglary spree, stealing approximately $1.7 million in merchandise, have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

Maykel Olides Hernandez, 40, Javier Guerra-Morales, 33, and Giorge Navea, 35, pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges, including RICO violations, smash-and-grab burglary, theft by taking, criminal damage to property, and possession of burglary tools.

Superior Court Judge Tony Baker handed down the sentences on Feb. 27 and March 5, with Hernandez receiving 30 years (13 in prison), Navea 25 years (10 in prison), and Guerra-Morales 20 years (9 in prison). Hernandez, deemed a recidivist offender, is ineligible for parole.

The charges stemmed from a series of high-stakes burglaries occurring between December 2022 and March 2023, targeting five jewelry stores in Cherokee, Forsyth, Cobb, and Fulton counties in Georgia, as well as Knox County, Tennessee.

The men executed a coordinated scheme, cutting holes in store roofs to bypass security, disabling alarms, and stealing high-value merchandise before transporting it to Florida for resale.

The most significant theft occurred on Jan. 4, 2023, when the men infiltrated a jewelry store on Cumming Highway in Cherokee County, making off with approximately $1.3 million in stolen goods.

Surveillance footage later confirmed that the burglars entered through a rooftop breach.

A second major heist took place in Alpharetta in March 2023, netting them an additional $400,000 in stolen jewelry.

Investigators from the Canton Police Department, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Cobb County Police Department, and Alpharetta Police Department worked together to link the crimes.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office played a crucial role by using cell tower data to track the suspects’ movements and establish connections between the burglaries.

“Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies worked together to investigate and arrest the suspects. Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office was instrumental in linking the burglaries and identifying the suspects by using cell tower data,” said Assistant District Attorney Rachel Murphy, of the Gang and Organized Crime Unit.

In addition to their prison sentences, Hernandez, Guerra-Morales, and Navea were ordered to pay $1.3 million in restitution, covering damages, stolen goods, and insurance losses.

They are also permanently banned from Cherokee County and prohibited from contacting one another or visiting any of the five targeted stores.

“These defendants worked together in a coordinated effort, with a clear plan to target specific jewelry stores and steal valuable merchandise. Although four of the stores they burglarized were outside of Cherokee County, we were able to charge the defendants under Georgia’s RICO Act,” said District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway. “Law enforcement partners from multiple agencies played a crucial role in this case, enabling Cherokee County to combat organized retail crime within our jurisdiction and beyond.”

New York, NY- D.A. Bragg Announces Guilty Plea In Diamond Swap.

New York, NY- Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. today announced the guilty plea of MANASHE SEZANAYEV, 41, for defrauding two diamond merchants by covertly swapping their diamonds for lab grown stones – worth substantially less than natural stones – that were cut to resemble the diamonds that the merchants had been offering for sale.

SEZANAYEV pleaded guilty in a New York State Supreme Court to Grand Larceny in the Second Degree. Under the terms of his plea, he is expected to be sentenced to 5 years of probation and make restitution in the amount of $200,000, which has already been paid. The $200,000 diamond was also returned to the victim. SEZANAYEV pleaded guilty on February 27, 2025.

“Manashe Sezanayev is facing accountability for stealing diamonds from merchants and replacing them with fake stones,” said District Attorney Bragg. “We will continue to prosecute those who take advantage of consumers and conduct business deals in a dishonest manner.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record, and as admitted in the defendant’s guilty plea, in early 2024, SEZANAYEV operated his company, Rachel’s Diamonds, in the Diamond District in Manhattan.

On February 5, 2024, a diamond merchant visited SEZANAYEV at his office with two diamonds that SEZANAYEV claimed to be interested in buying, valued at approximately $185,000 and $75,000. SEZANAYEV inspected the two stones and turned his back to the merchant to weigh them on his scale. He swapped the diamonds for lab grown stones that had been recut to imitate the natural stones and inscribed with forged Gemological Institute of America (“GIA”) laser inscriptions.

On March 27, 2024, SEZANAYEV told a second diamond merchant that he had a customer interested in buying that merchant’s diamond, valued at approximately $200,000. That same day, SEZANAYEV purchased a lab grown stone that was later recut to resemble that natural diamond and inscribed with a forged GIA laser inscription to mimic that natural diamond.

On April 2, 2024, the second merchant met with SEZANAYEV and the purported customer, and SEZANAYEV examined the merchant’s diamond. That merchant later learned that the stone SEZANAYEV returned to him was a lab grown diamond that was cut to resemble his stone.

47th street arrest

New York, NY- 2 arrested amid FBI search in Diamond District in connection to burglaries targeting pro athletes.

MIDTOWN, Manhattan – The FBI searched locations in Manhattan’s Diamond District in connection with the recent rash of burglaries targeting professional athletes and two arrests were made.

A search warrant was executed at 75 West 47th Street on Tuesday around 11:30 a.m.

Dimitriy Nezhinskiy, 43, and Juan Villar, 48, are charged with conspiracy to receive stolen property as part of an alleged fencing operation tied to the South American theft groups behind the string of burglaries targeting professional athletes, including Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

The two men are accused of buying luxury items linked to burglaries across the country and then selling them from a pawn shop in the Diamond District. The suspects allegedly bought stolen property from Bryan Leandro Herrera Maldonado, who’s accused of committing 16 residential robberies across the U.S. between 2019 and 2020.

Nezhinskiy was arrested Tuesday in New Jersey and Villar in Manhattan. The two are due to appear in court in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday.

“As alleged, the defendants created an illicit market and fueled demand for burglaries by South American Theft Groups and other crews around the country by purchasing stolen watches, jewelry and other luxury items, and then re-selling them in their New York City store,” said United States Attorney John Durham.

For almost five years, authorities say Nezhinskiy and Villar served as unlawful brokers to sell stolen luxury items by purchasing them from burglary crews based out of South America. The stolen property, including jewelry, watches, handbags and assorted luxury items, had been swiped from homes outside of New York and transported into the state, prosecutors said.

According to the indictment, phone records and video surveillance links Nezhinskiy to at least two members of a four-man burglary crew believed to be involved in the December 9, 2024 burglary of Burrow.

An undercover detective conducted seven controlled sales of purported stolen property, between October 2022 and January 2024, including high-end handbags and luxury accessories, to Nezhinskiy or Villar, or both, at their business location in Manhattan’s Diamond District.

During these controlled sales, the undercover detective provided the defendants with items that the undercover told the defendants had been stolen, and received cash in exchange for the stolen goods, the indictment said.

During Tuesday’s search on West 47th Street, authorities seized large quantities of suspected stolen property, including dozens of high-end watches and jewelry. Law enforcement also recovered large quantities of cash and marijuana.

Simultaneously, law enforcement executed a search warrant at storage units belonging to Nezhinskiy in New Jersey where an additional cache of suspected stolen property was found. From inside Nezhinskiy’s storage units, law enforcement recovered large quantities of luxury goods and clothing, including high-end handbags, wine, sports memorabilia, jewelry, artwork and power tools consistent with those commonly used in burglaries and opening safes.

Monterey, CA- Caught on Camera: Monterey jeweler loses $20,000 in Valentine’s Day theft.

MONTEREY, Calif. – The owner of a jewelry store in downtown Monterey says he lost $20,000 after a pair stole from him on Valentine’s Day without him even knowing.

“It’s a kind of day you’re thinking about romance and love and business, good business because it’s Valentine’s Day. And you don’t expect something like this,” said Steve Saunders, owner if Steve Saunders Master Jeweler.

Saunders shows the moments it all supposedly went down on surveillance video, pointing out two people as the thieves.

“Ding! Hello! Hello!” the video captures the man and woman entering the store.

The video shows the pair asking for multiple high-priced items, and Saunders is seen running around to pull out jewelry.

“My problem is I was so excited about making a big sale that’s all I could think about,” Saunders said.

The pair asked Saunders to put the merchandise in a jewelry box and wrap it in a plastic bag, which he did.

The customers put down a $200 deposit before leaving to go to the bank to withdraw more.

“How could something like that happen?” asked reporter Christian Balderas.

“Sleight of hand,” Saunders replied.

Saunders put the jewelry box and the bag in the safe, but the couple never returned, leading Saunders to believe something was wrong.

“I went to look in the safe and as soon as I picked up the white bag, my heart sank because I could tell immediately now that I’m paying attention that the box was empty,” Saunders said.

The Monterey Police Department says they are investigating.

“What would you say to them if they’re watching?” asked Balderas.

“I’m going to find you,” Saunders said.

The store owner, Steve Saunders, says he is offering a reward of $1,000 for any information that leads to their arrest.

DuPage County, Illinois- Two Jewelry Store Burglary Suspects ARRESTED from Ohio Released Pre-Trial by DuPage County Judge After Capture by Lombard Police

Lombard, IL– Police officers about 8:56 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2025, were dispatched to Rogers & Holland Jewelers after receiving information that two individuals, later identified as the defendants, were inside the store approximately two hours after it had closed. Following an investigation into the matter, police discovered that Alls and Butler allegedly used a crowbar to pry open a security gate at the store. Once inside the store, the defendants allegedly stole approximately $137.205.45 worth of merchandise from the display cases. While in the store, Alls noticed a security officer, and yelled “we gotta go!” at which time both offenders fled the scene on foot, ultimately getting into a silver Volvo. Nearby officers located the Volvo at Highland Avenue and Roosevelt Road and observed the license plate was covered by a towel. Officers subsequently conducted a traffic stop and took the defendants into custody without incident. When processing the scene, officers located a crowbar in the backseat of the Volvo. Police also discovered a bag of jewelry allegedly thrown from the defendants’ vehicle near Roosevelt Road and Stewart Avenue, approximately two hundred feet from where the vehicle was initially observed by officers, and about two miles from the Rogers & Holland Jewelers.

“As I have said before, burglary and retail theft are not victimless crimes. Shoppers, employers, employees, business owners and entire communities ultimately bear the cost in the form of higher prices, lost revenue and wages, reduced local economic investment and a lost sense of security. I thank the Lombard Police Department for their work on this case and for their ongoing efforts in keeping our retail establishments safe for employees and patrons. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Sean Kinsella and Michael Pingaj for their work in securing charges against Mr. Alls and Mr. Butler.”

— DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin

“I would like to recognize our patrol officers and detectives for some fantastic professional police work that led to the apprehension of the individuals involved and the recovery of the property stolen in this incident. I would also like to thank DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his office for their assistance in securing appropriate charges.”

— Lombard Deputy Chief of Police Joe Grage

The next court date for both defendants is scheduled for March 10, 2025, in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of a defendants’ guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

West Allis, WI- pawn shop jewelry theft; 2 men from out of state ARRESTED!

West Allis, WI- More than $30,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from a West Allis pawn shop.
Two men – one from New York, the other from Washington – are charged with theft.
Court filings said the investigation involved authorities in Illinois and Indiana. Now, two men from opposite ends of the country are charged with theft in Milwaukee County.

Court records identified 23-year-old Procoror Muntean and 26-year-old Retan Varga. Muntean is from Queens Village, New York. Varga is from Kent, Washington. Both men are yet to appear in court on the charges.

West Allis police were called to Pawn America, at 76th and Lincoln, on Feb. 10. According to a criminal complaint, an employee told police that two men came in and asked to see some items from the jewelry case.

Prosecutors said those men, since identified as Muntean and Varga, took several items to the cash registers where one of them asked about some shoes. When the employee went over to the shoes, the men said they needed to get $10,000 to buy the jewelry and then left the store.

Approximately 15 minutes later, court filings said the employee noticed the jewelry he showed the men was missing. The items totaled more than $30,000.

The day after the theft, court filings said a detective from Illinois contacted West Allis police to say one of the Pawn America theft suspects had stolen a watch worth $50,000 from a store there. Investigators then learned Muntean and Varga had been stopped in Indiana, where Muntean was taken into custody for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. In custody there, he admitted to stealing the watch in Illinois.

West Allis police reviewed photos of Muntean and Varga provided by authorities in Illinois. Comparing those photos to surveillance video from Pawn America, the complaint states detectives identified the suspects as Muntean and Varga. Pursuant to a search warrant, Indiana State Police searched the vehicle and found multiple pieces of jewelry believed to have been stolen from Pawn America.

Court filings also noted that a Shorewood police detective contacted West Allis police on Feb. 12. The detective said Muntean and Varga were in a separate Feb. 10 theft in which an $8,000 bracelet was stolen from a jeweler. At this time, the men are not charged with theft from that jewelry.

San Carlos, California – An 18-year-old suspected of stealing $56,000 in jewelry from a San Carlos store in September 2024, along with two other people, was arrested this week.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s office arrested the Oakland resident on Tuesday, according to a Friday news release. He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on robbery, burglary and grand theft charges. The office is continuing to identify and locate two others involved in the theft.

Puyallup, WA- Jewelry kiosk inside Puyallup mall burglarized

PUYALLUP, Wash. — A jewelry kiosk inside a Puyallup mall was burglarized. Puyallup police told KIRO 7 News that multiple suspects shot out an entrance of the South Hill Mall Monday around 6:30 a.m.

Joe Bell, a spokesperson for the mall, said the two suspects entered near the movie theater and targeted Banter by the Piercing Pagoda inside the mall. Half of the jewelry cases were completely empty as of Wednesday afternoon, while several were missing glass.

“Concerned, concerned for the safety of the people, and of course the workers,” said Christopher Ramirez, a shopper. We called the company to get more details, but no one answered. However, Bell said the suspects dashed away before police and security arrived.

“These particular perpetrators came and went very fast,” he said. “It is very reminiscent, just the method that they used of similar burglaries we have seen in the Puget Sound area in the past couple of weeks. We’re working really closely with Puyallup police.”

KIRO 7 News asked Bell if the mall had plans to make any updates following the incident. The spokesperson said he couldn’t disclose any details for safety reasons, but said the mall’s top priority is safety. “We pride ourselves on having a very robust security arrangement at the mall, both human and electronic,” he said.

Puyallup detectives declined to share surveillance footage of the suspects, stating they did not want to impact the investigation.

Greece, NY- Three people arrested following smash-and-grab robbery at Greece Ridge mall jewelry store

Greece, N.Y. — Three people face charges in connection with a jewelry store robbery at The Mall at Greece Ridge last month.

Police said eight suspects entered the mall wearing masks and gloves Jan. 6, with six of them going to Dubai Jewelry while the other two stayed by the vestibule.

The suspects reportedly jumped the store’s counter and used a baseball bat to break the display cases, stealing roughly $90,000 worth of merchandise.

A Wilmorite security officer reportedly confronted the suspects during the incident but was threatened with a baseball bat. Police said another security officer was nearly struck by a bat that one of the suspects threw.

The suspects allegedly fled the scene in a dark Chevrolet Malibu, later found unoccupied on Lang Street in Rochester. Police said detectives identified two vehicles involved in the crime.

SWAT teams from the Greece and Rochester police departments executed a “high-risk” search warrant Wednesday at an address on Remington Street in Rochester, according to Greece police, with New York State Police assisting them with searches of three other locations.

Police said they recovered “significant physical evidence” during the searches and arrested three people.

Michael Ruiz, 28, Jahrusalem Smith, 30, and Destiny Allen, 41, all of Rochester, were each charged with robbery, grand larceny and criminal mischief.

BELLAIRE, Texas- ‘They knew what they were doing’: Bellaire jewelry store owner followed home and robbed.

BELLAIRE, Texas – Two men are under arrest after a Bellaire man was boxed into his driveway and robbed.

It happened around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday in a neighborhood near the West Loop and Bissonnet Street.

The victim, who asked not to be identified, had just parked in his driveway after coming home from the jewelry store he owns.

That’s when a silver pickup truck blocked him in, and Bellaire police said Timothy Singleton and Stafford Johnson had gotten out.

“I’m thinking, ‘What in the world? Who in the world are these guys?'” the victim told Eyewitness News.

Without so much as a word, he said the two suspects opened his doors and began picking through his car.

“They knew what they were doing. They came right to my car. One came on the right side, one came on the left side, got what they did, ran back in the truck,” he said. “Luckily, praise God, that they didn’t pull guns out.”

The men got away with one of the victim’s phones, his key fob, and 22 rings.

“My adrenaline kicked in. As soon as they pulled out of my driveway, I immediately called 911, and I started chasing them,” the victim said.

The accused thieves made it as far as Bellaire Boulevard, where they lost control of their car while trying to make a U-turn under the West Loop.

The victim said they bailed out and took off with the stolen items in hand.

Officers with the Bellaire Police Department’s Special Response Team just happened to be nearby. They were returning from the shooting that killed a deputy and injured a K-9 when the call went out.

“There’s always gonna be an element of luck, but when luck and preparation come together, then good things happen,” Chief Onesimo Lopez said.

Within minutes, the victim said a tow truck driver was able to direct officers to a parking garage, where police say they found the suspects hiding on the second floor.

Both already had open warrants for other crimes.

In May, ABC13 reported on a Meyerland man who was robbed after being followed home from the bank.

In June, the same thing happened to a Meyerland woman.

Police say to be on the lookout for people who may be following you. If you think you’re being followed, you can call law enforcement and go to the nearest police station.

“Take an indirect route home. Take a couple of rights, maybe a left, and make sure that you’re not being followed,” Lopez said. Singleton and Johnson have been charged with theft.

Miami-FL- Feds arrest ‘goons’ they say plotted to kidnap, rob Miami jeweler: ‘One good bop should do it’

MIAMI, FL- A group of men identified by a ringleader as “goons” were plotting through a messaging app to kidnap a Miami jeweler and rob him of $2 million in cryptocurrency. But they didn’t know an informant was also in their group chat.

That’s all according to court documents obtained by Local 10 News on Wednesday, following the arrests of Zacary Briggs, 22; Aaron Hammond, 21; Tre’von Neal, 20; and Evan Puckett, 18, on multiple federal felonies.

The alleged plot

A federal criminal complaint authored by an FBI agent states that a “confidential source” informed authorities on Jan. 6 that a person named “Jack” was assembling “a group of people to kidnap a jeweler who worked out of the Seybold Building,” a well-known hub of jewelers at 36 NE First St. in downtown Miami.

The source told investigators that “Jack” had been in contact with the victim online and “was seeking to exchange a large amount of cryptocurrency for cash,” authorities said.

The next day, “Jack” told the informant that he would put him in a group chat with the “goons,” members of the kidnapping group, the complaint states. “Jack,” authorities say, also sent the source a screenshot of the victim’s digital wallet, showing he had about $2 million worth of crypto.

In the following days, “Jack” began a group chat via the Telegram app called “Play.” In it were “Jack,” along with participants identified as “Dot,” “Swipey” and “Tim.”

The informant was known as “D” or “Big D.” While the complaint doesn’t state who “Jack,” “Tim” and “Dot” were, agents said they were later able to identify “Swipey” as Puckett.

“Jack” would later tell the group chat, “(S)o I told them not to hurt or do shi (sic) to him. We just need to get him,” the complaint states,

“Jack” and his partner “Tim” ultimately agreed to provide the other members of the group $3,500 before the kidnapping.

Authorities said the group discussed plans to hold the jeweler until a crypto ransom was paid and it was decided that “Tim” would provide a vehicle for the kidnapping. The complaint states that “Dot” “later stated that they would be carrying firearms, including Mac-10s and .223 assault-style rifles for the kidnapping.”

The informant told agents that members of the group had asked him to provide a car prior to Monday, the planned date of the kidnapping, ”so they could drive around the area where the kidnapping would occur and scope it out beforehand.”

Authorities said “Tim” arranged to send the informant, “D” to meet with Puckett “near or around Palm Beach County” to pick up the car.

But instead of “D,” the complaint states that investigators sent an undercover agent posing as the informant to meet Puckett. He brought a black, 2023 Chevy Tahoe which was, unbeknownst to the crooks, outfitted with wires, authorities said.

After Puckett met with the agent and got the SUV, he told the group chat, “Big D was cool,” the complaint states. He was later heard, after moving the SUV to a Broward home, saying, “Oh, he’s not getting this back,” referring to the Tahoe.

Authorities said on Monday, they tracked Neal’s cellphone from central Florida as he and the other suspect headed from Ocala to Davie to meet with Puckett to commit the kidnapping.

The complaint states that on a recorded call, Puckett was heard telling “Jack” and the informant that he had a “convoy of (N-words) doing this s— for nothing.” He would later send the group photos of “a handgun and an AR-Style pistol” that he had procured, agents said.

In another recorded call, three members of the kidnapping group were heard talking about the plot, the complaint states.

Authorities said a male voice is heard saying that “one knock” and “one good bop should do it” but that they did not want to give the victim “brain damage.”

“Another male voice can then be heard saying ‘I don’t want this (n-word) to stab me or f—ing shoot me,’ to which a third male voice then replies ‘Tre’von, I would kill that n—- dawg,’” investigators wrote in the complaint.

Authorities said they intercepted the men as they parked ahead of the kidnapping. They said they immediately captured Briggs, Hammond and Puckett and said they arrested Neal a short time later after he ran toward a nearby business.

Agents interview suspects

Authorities said they interviewed the suspects after taking them into custody.

Neal, they said, told investigators that “he was supposed to act as ‘security’ for the (group) and would protect the crew if (the victim) tried to defend himself with a weapon.”

Neal, who had a knife on him, said he “did not intend” to use it in the kidnapping and said “he had changed his mind about participating in the robbery and wanted to leave,” the complaint states.

Puckett, investigators said, admitted that the group intended to rob the victim for crypto and “admitted that he brought the guns the group members would possess during the robbery; however, he claimed that he intended to use them only in the event that he needed to defend himself.”

Investigators said Briggs first claimed that Neal had “hired him to drive him around and that he was going to get paid $500 a day” but that “he was asleep during the trip” and said that Puckett was “known to scam people for cryptocurrency.”

Briggs, the complaint states, “eventually admitted he was aware that the (group) was driving down” to South Florida “to participate in the kidnapping and robbery,” but “he only agreed to act as the ‘driver’ and he did not plan on getting involved in the violence against (the victim).”

It states he “also told law enforcement that if anyone threatened his safety during the robbery, he would have run them over with the truck” and said that the plan was for Puckett to meet with the jeweler “and pretend that he was going to give him a couple of watches in exchange for cryptocurrency.”

Hammond also admitted to the plot, agents said, and said the group’s “plan was to lure the jeweler to the car, rob him and then let him go.”

Investigators said he told them that “he was supposed to be the ‘jump out guy,’ which meant he would “bonk” the victim on the head and put him in the SUV.

They said Hammond told them when he arrived in Broward, he “saw the rifle in the vehicle and became worried because he was on ‘probation.’”

Charges and court dates

The men were initially booked into Broward Sheriff’s Office jail facilities following their arrests.

They are facing federal charges of kidnapping conspiracy, attempted conspiracy, Hobbs Act robbery and attempted Hobbs Act extortion.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the kidnapping conspiracy charge carries a potential life sentence.

Online records show that Briggs and Hammond were scheduled to appear in federal court on Friday for detention hearings.

Detention hearings for Neal and Puckett were scheduled for the following Tuesday.

Philadelphia, PA- 125-year-old crown stolen from St. John the Evangelist church in Center City

Philadelphia, PA– Police are searching for a man who broke into a Center City church early Saturday morning and stole a golden crown from a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The man was caught on camera smashing a stained glass window and entering St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church at 21 S. 13th St. just after 1 a.m., police said.

“Our video Ã¢â‚¬â€ we have outside and inside cameras Ã¢â‚¬â€ showed the guy coming in,” St. John’s Associate Pastor John McCloskey told NBC10. “And he was in and out within 10 minutes. He was very agile and he knew exactly what he was doing.”

Surveillance footage released Monday by police shows the man climbing the church’s exterior. Police said they believe he drove a gray Mitsubishi SUV.  The crown is made of gold and is adorned with gems. It was created around 1900 by James E. Caldwell & Co to celebrate the reopening of the church after an 1899 fire completely destroyed its interior except for the marble Mary statue that the crown was later placed on, the Inquirer reported.

The stained glass window that was broken dates back to the church’s reopening in 1902. It was made in Munich, Germany.

Jeweler Killed- Ft. Lauderdale, FL- ‘Family friend’ killed Fort Lauderdale jeweler over Rolex deal ‘gone bad,’ cops say.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Ã¢â‚¬â€œ Arrest documents obtained by Local 10 News on Monday are shedding new light on the murder of a 73-year-old man in a Fort Lauderdale office tower. Police said it was all over a Rolex watch.

According to the newly-obtained Fort Lauderdale police arrest report, Anthony D’Amore was found dead last Monday inside his third-floor jewelry business within the tower, located at 6245 N. Federal Highway in the city’s Imperial Point neighborhood.

Police said D’Amore, of Pompano Beach, had been reported missing to the Broward Sheriff’s Office after having been last seen on Dec. 20. They said detectives responding to a welfare check at the behest of his wife discovered his body three days later.

Authorities said surveillance video would show that a man D’Amore’s wife described as a “family friend,” Nenad Milosevich, was responsible.

The report states that the CCTV footage showed Milosevich, 56, entering the building with D’Amore just after 10 p.m. on the night of the killing. Police noted that Milosevich had picked up D’Amore from his home earlier that evening.

Police said the two were seen exiting the third-floor elevator and entering the business, described as a “one-room workshop and showroom,” together. Only one of the men would exit alive.

The surveillance video showed Milosevich exiting the business just after 12:45 a.m. “carrying a small bag and a large square items (sic) covered in a towel or blanket,” the report states. He then “reached into the suite and locked the door from the inside,” police said. Authorities said there was a video camera within the business as well but its cables were detached.

Police said a Christmas Eve autopsy revealed that D’Amore had multiple neck, back and sub-scalp contusions, as well as abrasions to the back of his neck. A full autopsy report remained pending as of Thursday.

Authorities said they went to Milosevich’s apartment along Port Royale Boulevard, less than a mile away from the scene, on Thursday in order to speak with him. They said he wasn’t there but agreed to meet with detectives after a phone call.

The report states that Milosevich, also known by the alternate spelling Nenad Milosevic, sat down with detectives. It states Milosevich told detectives that he had dinner with D’Amore and they then went to his business because Milosevich “was hoping to get some jewelry for his girlfriend for Christmas.”

But Milosevich, police said, still had outstanding payments to be made on a $20,000 Rolex. He told detectives that he had paid about $16,000 on the watch up until that point.

“The deal for the Rolex had gone bad and (D’Amore) was upping the price because Milosevic was not paying fast enough,” a detective wrote. “(D’Amore) would also not give him other items in exchange for the monies already paid. This caused an argument between them.”

Police said Milosevich admitted to hitting D’Amore twice in the throat, then “found himself on top” of him on the floor, where he “choked” him.

Authorities said as D’Amore lay unresponsive on the floor, Milosevich told them he grabbed about 20 pieces of jewelry and put them in a bag. The report states he also admitted to unplugging the video recorder and wrapping it in a blanket before leaving the office.

The report states that Milosevich later threw the stolen jewelry and DVR off a bridge.

He was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.

As of Monday, Milosevich remained held without bond in the BSO Main Jail.

Investigators determined they were in possession of $500,000 worth of jewelry stolen from a 50-year-old man who was beaten and robbed by three masked men in Astoria.

The victim was transporting a large inventory of jewelry on the night of Thursday, Dec. 12, when he got out of his vehicle in front of Rosa’s Pizza at 31-01 21st St. just before 10 p.m. He noticed three masked men exiting a vehicle who proceeded to punch and kick him and forcibly remove a bag containing the jewelry, according to the criminal complaint.

The bag containing the stolen jewelry was recovered from the vehicle and returned to the victim, police said Sunday.

She added, “I tried to get away from the police, and I crashed the car. I ran out of the car and hid under a truck,” according to the criminal complaint.

Burglary Suspects

Three suspects sentenced to prison following arrests for string of burglaries

Burglary Suspects

Muskingum County, Ohio – On December 10, 2024, the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office issued a press release announcing that three suspects have been sentenced for their role in a series of burglaries at jewelry stores. The press release is below. Click here to read additional information about the suspects’ arrest. The three suspects are pictured above.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, December 10, 2024
Multi-State Multimillion-Dollar Jewel Thieves Sentenced to Prison
Three thieves running a multimillion-dollar, multi-state jewel theft ring were sentenced to prison for their crimes.

On December 5, Pedro Garcia, 44, of Los Angeles, California, appeared in Muskingum County Court of Common Pleas for sentencing.

Judge Kelly Cottrill sentenced Garcia to serve 14 years in prison.

Rafael Flores Hernandez, 39, and Reyes Higuera, 51, were sentenced on December 9. Hernandez will serve up to 16½ years in prison. Higuera will serve up to 14 years behind bars.

At earlier hearings, Hernandez, Higuera, and Garcia all pleaded guilty to felony engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and felony aggravated theft.

Hernandez and Higuera are illegal aliens from Mexico and have been deported from the United States multiple times. Garcia is a legal resident from California.

The thieves’ multimillion-dollar crime spree case began in May 2023 in Illinois when they broke into a jewelry store. The bandits smashed jewelry cases and used large plastic totes to haul away the jewelry.

Garcia and the other thieves robbed more jewelry stores between May 2023 and August 2024 in Illinois, Maryland, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio, and Georgia. Each robbery lasted about two minutes.

Forsythe County, Georgia Sheriff’s Department Detective Caleb Martin was assigned the case, conducting a dogged one-man nationwide manhunt for the crew.

Determined to see the bandits brought to justice, Det. Martin worked tirelessly along with the Jewelers’ Security Alliance, an industry safety association, to track down details of other thefts, watch surveillance videos, and coordinate intelligence from other agencies.

His efforts were rewarded by being appointed to a Federal Bureau of Investigations task force allowing him to continue his investigation of the bandits.

Over the next several months, Martin contacted multiple law enforcement agencies and warned them that the trio was targeting stores in their area, but the thieves remained on the loose until they came to Zanesville.

In July, Martin contacted the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office about the theft ring. The Sheriff’s Office took immediate action, using advanced technology to track the thieves and monitor their whereabouts.

Over a two-week period, officers from the Sheriff’s Office and Zanesville Police Department began intensive surveillance of their movements, locally and in Columbus.

A tracker was installed on the suspects’ car. Detectives informed the local business, whose franchises had been repeatedly targeted by the trio. Officers began watching the jewelry store, waiting for the thieves to strike.

Finally, around 4:00 a.m. on August 1, the three robbers broke into their target. During this break-in, they were caught in the act. Working with other law enforcement agencies, officers from the Zanesville Police Department and Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office were waiting nearby and moved in to capture the trio of bandits after they had smashed jewelry display cases and loaded more than $170,000 of jewelry into their totes.

The three men are suspects in more than twenty similar jewelry store smash-and-grab thefts in the Southeast and Midwest United States.

In total, Garcia and the crew stole more than $3 million of jewels.

Muskingum County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Litle says cooperation between local and out-of-state law enforcement agencies made it possible to help keep the community safe by catching Garcia and the other thieves.

“It was a real pleasure to work on this case and see the ‘all hands on deck’ cooperation between local and out-of-state law enforcement, in order to catch these thieves,” Litle said. “Everyone involved in this case went the extra mile to protect not only our local businesses; but businesses nationwide.”

Litle says the imprisonment of the jewel thieves should send a message to other criminals thinking about coming to Muskingum County.

“Once again, Judge Cottrill’s sentences demonstrate that Muskingum County is not the place to commit crime,” Litle said.
