On 8/14/18, 30-year-old Gabriel Ocampo-Mayorquin admitted in federal court that he was a member of a violent robbery crew that robbed traveling jewelry salespeople that visited Houston.
On September 11, 2009, Ocampo-Mayorquin and his Colombian accomplices robbed an off-duty officer from the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission (TABC). Ocampo Mayorquin and Santos Diaz-Soto, 32, approached the officer as he was waiting in his car for the salesman. Ocampo-Mayorquin used a “glass punch” to break the windows of the car. Diaz-Soto, brandished a gun.
After breaking the window, the men attempted to steal several watches. The officer fired shots which injured both assailants. Diaz-Soto was shot in the back and arms, while Ocampo-Mayorquin was shot in the arm.
The two injured men, fled into a green Acura driven by 35-year-old Juan Carlos Valencia. Shortly thereafter, witnesses saw three vehicles enter into an apartment complex to change license plates and switch cars. After the robbery, Ocampo-Mayorquin fled to Mexico. The other subjects were charged and sentenced.
Ocampo-Mayorquin was incarcerated for eight years in a Mexican prison. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) extradited Ocampo Mayorquin from Mexico to face charges in the United States. Ocampo-Mayorquin faces up to 20 years in prison.
