Merced, CA – On May 6, 2022, at approximately 3:25 p.m., a male subject, later identified as 39-year-old Stephan Stanley, allegedly smashed a jewelry display case inside of a department store.

As Stanley was in the process of stealing jewelry, two men intervened and attempted to stop him. Stanley hit one of the men with a hammer. As Stanley tried to pepper spray the men, he actually pepper sprayed himself in the process. The men were able to hold Stanley down until police arrived and arrested him. There were no major injuries to those involved.

Stanley was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, drug charges, and robbery.
