On the date listed above, shortly after 10:40 a.m., police in Wilmington, DE responded to a report of a robbery in progress. The robbery occurred at a jewelry store.

The owner’s son, Steve, released a statement regarding the robbery and indicated that his 68-year-old father was initially pistol-whipped. Then the robber, later identified as 39-year-old Calvin Ushery, stomped on the jeweler’s head when he tried to get up.

Ushery then allegedly beat the owner in the head 28 times, with two of the blows coming from a hammer. Steve described his father as being gravely injured as a result of the attack. The jeweler was critically ill in the intensive care unit (ICU)) and suffered from an internal head bleed and a severe concussion. The jeweler spent 4 days in the ICU, then he went to a rehabilitation facility where Steve, says his father had to relearn how to read, talk, and walk again.

Calvin Ushery was arrested without incident on September 22, 2022. He was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, robbery in the 1st degree, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, and criminal mischief under $5,000.
