Man Pleads Guilty in Attacks on Jewelers in Costa Mesa and Yorba Linda, California

Gavel

Costa Mesa, California – April 12, 2024 – A 35-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday and was immediately sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for his part in kidnapping and robbing a jeweler in Costa Mesa and attempting to kidnap a jeweler in Yorba Linda.

Leonard Antonyeo Berry pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted kidnapping to commit a robbery, kidnapping for a robbery, torture, robbery, false imprisonment and battery, all felonies, and admitted sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a gun and inflicting great bodily injury on a victim.

Berry accepted a plea deal from Orange County Superior Court Judge Larry Yellin. Berry had 1,811 days credit for time behind bars awaiting trial.

Marvin Antoine Brown, 30, and Cedrick Emillion Reynolds, 33, pleaded guilty on Wednesday. Reynolds was sentenced to 23 years in prison and Brown is scheduled to be sentenced July 11.

The three were charged in connection with abductions Nov. 30, 2019, in Yorba Linda and Dec. 4, 2019, in Costa Mesa.

The three and a fourth unknown suspect drove from San Bernardino to Yorba Linda in Reynolds Toyota Camry on Nov. 30, 2019, prosecutors said in court papers. They parked outside of a jewelry store owners home and when he arrived home, two of the defendants grabbed him and attempted to pull him back into his Audi, prosecutors said.

The fourth suspect jumped into the drivers seat, but when the victim “screamed and fought” for a minute the four suspects fled, prosecutors said.

The victim found a GPS tracking device on his car on July 9, 2019, that was bought by Berry, prosecutors said.

Four days after that attempted kidnapping, another jewelry store owner was targeted by the defendants, prosecutors said. The owner of another jewelry store in Costa Mesa was closing up shop when two got out of Reynolds car and assaulted the victim, prosecutors said.

The men stuffed the victim, bound him with duct tape and drove off before beating him “severely over the course of the next few hours,” prosecutors said.

Berrys car returned to the jewelry store about 9 p.m. and one of the defendants got into the victims Mercedes-Benz and drove away along with Reynolds car, prosecutors said. Reynolds car returned a few minutes later and Reynolds was seen on video surveillance walking toward the store holding the victims umbrella, prosecutors said. Reynolds and Brown got into the jewelry store about 10 p.m. and were caught on video surveillance, prosecutors said. They appeared to get in with the victims keys, but when they tried to turn off the store alarm it went off, prompting the two men to flee, prosecutors said. The victim was driven to 2040 E. Dyer Road in Santa Ana where the jewelry store owner was dumped with no shirt and duct tape around his legs, prosecutors said. His attackers took his high-end watch worth about $20,000 and a gold chain worth about $27,000 as well as a gold ring and some diamonds, prosecutors said.

A tow truck driver found the victim about 11 p.m. The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for a fractured jaw, broken orbital sockets, multiple rib fractures, a cut on his liver and significant bruising all over his body, prosecutors said.

Reynolds pleaded guilty to torture, conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted kidnapping to commit robbery, kidnapping for robbery, robbery, false imprisonment and battery with serious bodily injury, all felonies. He also admitted sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury on the victim.

Brown pleaded guilty to kidnapping to commit robbery, robbery, false imprisonment and battery with serious bodily injury, all felonies. He also admitted sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury on the victim.

Berry is charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted kidnapping to commit robbery, kidnapping for robbery, torture, robbery, false imprisonment and battery, all felonies.

“It happened so fast”: 8 armed suspects clear out jewelry store

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) – April 14, 2024 – One of the oldest jewelry stores in Oakland, California, is picking up the pieces after a brazen armed robbery. It is the worst robbery the family-owned business has experienced in more than 40 years of operation and the thieves struck right in the middle of the day.

The chaos and terror that unfolded at a jewelry store in Oakland’s Chinatown is unlike anything the business has ever experienced in its more than 40 years of operation. “It happened so fast,” Tony Trinh said.

In surveillance video, Trinh’s 69-year-old mother Diana is seen ducking for cover and screaming for help and eight people smash nearly every single case. “We’ve been robbed a few times before but not at this level of brazen magnitude. Eight individuals and two getaway cars and guns drawn,” Trinh said.

With no security guard on duty at the time, her 76-year-old husband comes storming in wielding a firearm which scares the suspect away. “If he hadn’t done that they would have kept going,” Trinh said.

The family’s American dream and the majority of the store’s inventory was gone in less than a minute. “My mom was devastated and my dad was broken,” Trinh said. The devastating blow was made worse after the family let their business insurance lapse due to rising premiums.

“Her entire life work and savings gone in a few minutes. It’s rough. My mom is the leader of the pack. When she suffers I suffer,” Trinh said. Crime in the area is what prompted Trinh to become executive director of the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council and despite what happened, he remains optimistic.

“I’ve seen tremendous progress even though it doesn’t feel like that. In terms of cleaning and safety, there are a lot more out there ambassadors. We have walking officers, during the pandemic we didn’t,” he said.

Trinh admits that he is not sure if the store will stay in business. “Would love to but with the environment and how tough it’s been, we don’t know yet,” he said. The Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council has started a GoFundMe to help recoup the massive loss. Oakland Police Department said the investigation into this case is ongoing.

April 7, 2024 – In the U.S. Island Territory of Guam, a man who allegedly walked out of a jewelry store with $24,000 worth of jewelry on Saturday was captured and charged in court the same day. Officers with the Guam Police Department responded to a jewelry store in East Hagta just before noon for a reported theft. The stores employees told police that a man, later identified as David Quichocho Uncangco Jr., had entered the store searching for a birthday gift for his son. But, when showed some merchandise, he reportedly took off with the items.

“The defendant had requested to view two gold baht chains and one diamond pendant. The total value (was) $24,290,” a magistrate’s complaint filed in the Superior Court of Guam said.

“Police learned that the defendant had rented the silver sedan (and were) able to track the location of the vehicle. Police proceeded to said location,” the complaint said.

The jewelry store was not the only business to report a heist. On March 22, Uncangco allegedly stole a 24-karat gold coin from a pawn shop in Dededo.

“The defendant took the gold coin valued at $3,340 and walked out the door without paying for it,” the complaint said. Uncangco was charged with two counts of retail theft as second-degree felonies and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance as a third-degree felony.
