SMASH AND GRAB ROBBERY – PALMDALE, CA

On 4/25/23, at 12:38 p.m., a jewelry store experienced a smash & grab robbery. Upon approach to the jewelry showcase, the subject began to strike the glass with a hammer.� Once he successfully breached the glass, he stuck his hand in and retrieved 3 gold chains and 1 bracelet, then fled from the store.� Mall Security was notified as was the Palmdale Sheriff’s Department whereupon an investigation was initiated.� The subject is a known offender to the mall security team whose information was shared with local authorities.

Subject(s) Description: Mixed Asian/Black Male, mid 20’s, 5’8”, 160 lbs, dark-colored ear-length hair.� He was last seen wearing a black and white jacket, a white undershirt, and greyish-colored jeans.

Arrested Romanian Thieves

4 Romanian nationals arrested after a high-value jewelry theft

On April 26, 2023, staff from WEAR News published an article announcing the arrests of 4 Romanian nationals who have targeted the jewelry industry. The suspects were arrested in Missouri after they stole jewelry from a jewelry store that resulted in a significant dollar loss for the business.

The suspects committed the theft at a store in the jurisdiction of the Walton County Sheriff in Florida on April 11, 2023. The four suspects are “connected to an organized crime network.” The suspects were identified as George Paun, 31, Stela Sava, 26, Terca Tarnovan, 31, and Vasile Lacatus, 27. Each suspect was charged with “grand theft over $20,000 and grand theft in concert with one or more persons” for their involvement in another theft from a jewelry store that occurred in 2022, also in the jurisdiction of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Sava, Tarnovan, and Lacatus have multiple warrants for their most recently reported theft on April 11th. The Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and various state and local agencies, were described as “continuing their investigation into these suspects.” Click here to read the source for this posting and to learn how this crew was apprehended.

GRAB AND RUN – LAS VEGAS, NV

On 4/21/23, at approximately 6:37 p.m., a grab and run occurred at a retail jewelry store. A male subject requested to see a gold chain, During the presentation, a pendant was also requested.� The team member placed the pendant on the chain.� The subject requested to try on the chain and pendant, and when doing so, he fled from the site with both stolen pieces.

Subject Description: Black male adult with a beard, thin build, and approximately 5’6″.� He was last seen wearing a black/red t-shirt, light colored jeans, and a black ball cap. GRAB AND RUN – HENDERSON, NV

On 4/18/23, at 6:00 p.m., a grab and run occurred at a retail jewelry store. A male subject under the pretense of shopping, requested to see a gold chain. After receiving the chain, he returned it and then requested to see a bracelet. The subject then grabbed the chain from the team member’s hand and fled the location with both pieces. The subject was described as a 5’8″ White male with a medium build. He is in his early 30’s, and has a short beard. He was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, black sweatpants, and a black ball cap. GRAB AND RUN – CAMBRIDGE, OH

On 4/17/23, at approximately 2:32 p.m., a jewelry store was the victim of a grab and run theft. A male subject entered the store and requested to see engagement rings. He was very comfortable with small talk and said he was ready to make the “big commitment.” The subject said that he was working locally doing commercial painting, and owned his own business. He said that he was interested in a Leo diamond. The store manager then joined the presentation and asked to look up the guest in clienteling. The subject said there may be a wish list under the name Janell.

As the manager continued to search clienteling, the assistant pulled out the ring that the subject wanted to look at. The manager continued to press for information to find the right clienteling profile and the subject said that he needed to go out to his vehicle to retrieve his phone to look up phone numbers. The subject re-entered the store after approximately 3 minutes. He walked in, said “Yep, that’s the one!”, grabbed the ring, and ran out the door. He drove away in a silver Chevrolet Cobalt-type vehicle. The subject was described as a White male in his early 40’s. He is 5’8″ and has a medium build. He was last seen wearing jeans covered in pants, a grey/red hoodie with red lettering, and a camo hat. GRAB AND RUN -NEWPORT NEWS, VA

On 4/19/23, at approximately 6:46 p.m., a young Black male approached a jewelry kiosk inside a mall. The subject had an accent and asked to see multiple chains. It was explained to him that he could only see one item at a time.� During the entire process, he kept his head down hiding his face. He placed the chain in his palm and ran out the back of the mall. He had on a red baseball cap, and black and grey washed jeans.� The subject is 5’8″ and in his late 20’s. He was last seen wearing short dreads under his ball cap.� He also has a small build and weighs 160 lbs. Two jewelry stores burglarized in similar manner in just over a week

Stockton, CA – On April 18, 2023, at approximately 3:45 a.m., a burglary occurred at a retail jewelry store. Several subjects used a car to repeatedly ram into the front of the jewelry store. Seven or eight male subjects dressed in hoodies, proceeded to pull open the store’s metal sliding gate, and break into the store. The subject’s stole jade and bangles, but they did not obtain expensive pieces. The subjects escaped in five minutes.

On April 10, 2023, another jewelry store a little more than a mile away from the most recent burglary, suffered their own burglary at 3:30 a.m. In that incident a car was also used to smash into the front of the jewelry store. ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED – PEABODY, MA

On 4/17/23, at approximately 1:00 p.m., police in Peabody, MA responded to a jewelry store inside a mall that experienced a robbery. A male subject carried a backpack with a note, and motioned to his waist, implying that he had a gun. The subject stole several necklaces and watches. A sergeant with the Peabody police noticed a man matching the suspect’s description. The suspect had been wearing all black with a white mask. The sergeant found the suspect, who was still wearing a mask. The suspect attempted to flee, but the sergeant was able to apprehend him. The suspect was later identified as 27-year-old Starlin Bautista. He was charged with armed robbery as well as assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

GRAB AND RUN – VICTORVILLE, CA

On 4/10/23, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a retail jewelry store experienced a grab & run theft.� Upon entry into the store, the subject asked to view a 4 ct. total weight, 14k white gold ring.� Shortly after, the subject began sniffing the ring, and he fled with the ring in his possession.

Subject Description:� Hispanic Male, 30’s, 5’6”, medium build.� He has tattoos of names on his left hand/two fingers (middle and ring finger).� He has a mustache with short hair, and he was last seen wearing a light blue short sleeve shirt, khaki shorts, long white socks, and white shoes. Former Employee Stole Over $100K Worth of Jewelry

Las Vegas, NV – On April 11, 2023, a former employee of a department store, identified as Carlos Flores-Ochoa, was arrested at his home in Las Vegas, NV.

The arrest took place following a months-long investigation. An arrest report indicated that Flores-Ochoa stole 23 pieces of jewelry worth an estimated $146,000 between October 7th, 2022, and November 4th, 2022. A loss prevention officer reported the crimes. Flores-Ochoa had reportedly confessed to the thefts on November 8, 2022, which is the same day he was fired.

Police were provided with video footage showing Flores-Ochoa disarming security alarms on display cases and placing stolen items in his vest. Flores-Ochoa then allegedly sold the items at a pawn shop.
