Professional International Jewel Thief Arrested After Stealing from Multiple Jewelers

Yaorong Wan Arrested

New York, NY – On May 3, 2024, 49-year-old Yaorong Wan was arrested and charged with grand larceny for his involvement in jewelry store thefts in Manhattan.

Wan had been wanted and suspected of committing a series of thefts, including crimes that had taken place in South Korea, Miami, Florida, Beverly Hills, California, New York, and East Rutherford, New Jersey. Wan was wanted by INTERPOL, the international criminal police, for his involvement in a theft in South Korea.

On March 4, 2024, Wan allegedly entered a high-end jewelry store in Midtown Manhattan, NY where he asked the store’s employee to see an engraved platinum ring, before he eventually left cubic zirconia mounted in an 18-carat white gold ring in its place.

The store did not discover the theft until a week later after reviewing camera footage, which allegedly showed Wan conceal the real ring in his palm during the theft.

On March 12, 2024, Wan allegedly committed another theft at a jewelry store in Manhattan where he stole a ring. A similar crime also took place on April 19, 2024 at a high-end jewelry store in Long Island, NY. Watch the videos below to learn more about the extent of Wan’s crimes.

Subjects use sledgehammers in jewelry store smash and grab

Westport, CT – On May 9, 2024, Officers from the Westport Police Department responded to a high-end jewelry store at 3:10 p.m., to investigate a report of a robbery.

Employees indicated two individuals wearing masks and gloves (pictured above) entered the store with hammers and proceeded to smash through display cases.

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – GRAB AND RUN

On 5/8/2024, at 3:20 p.m., a retail jewelry store was the victim of a grab and run theft. A lone male subject entered the store and looked at several items. He stated he was looking for something to go with his watch. After looking at several items, the male asked to see a ring. Once it was removed from the showcase, the male took possession of it, and fled from the store.

GRAB AND RUN – POOLER, GA

On the 5/7/2024, at1:20 p.m., a jewelry store was the victim of a grab and run theft.� A lone male entered the location and began looking a diamond rings.� The male stated he was shopping for his girlfriend.� The male asked to see an item which was a Neil Lane Bridal Diamond Ring.� A profile was created, and the male provided the name Christopher.� Shortly after, the item was removed from the showcase.� The male gained possession of the item, stated “she’s gonna love this” and then ran out of the store.�

GRAB AND RUN – CONCORD, CA

On 5/4/2024, at approximately 3:20 p.m., a male subject entered a retail jewelry store and expressed interest in gold chains and gold bracelets. The subject requested to see multiple items, but was only shown one at a time. He requested to view a chain, which was a 24″ Men’s 10K Yellow Gold 10.33 MM solid Curb Chain Necklace. Once it was presented to him, the subject grabbed the chain and fled from the store.

The subject was described as a Black male in his early to mid 20’s. He is approximately 5’9″ and has a thin build, and black hair. He was last seen wearing a yellow gold chain, a black jacket, a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and white shoes. He also has a scar on his forehead.

2023 Annual Crime Report

The Jewelers Security Alliance Publishes Its 2023 Annual Crime Report

New York, NY – On April 23, 2024, the Jewelers Security Alliance (JSA) published its annual crime report. The executive summary is listed below. Click the bottom link to read the full report.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. In 2023 the total dollar losses from crimes against U.S. jewelry firms reported to JSA was $133.2
million, a 2.9% increase from $129.4 million in 2022. 

2. In 2023 the total number of crimes committed against U.S. jewelry firms was 1,621, a decrease
from 2,211 in 2022, which was the highest number of crimes JSA has ever recorded. The number of
crimes in 2023 represented a 26.7% decrease from crimes reported to JSA in 2022. 

3. The crime category that experienced the greatest reduction in 2023 was Grab and Run thefts. The
number of Grab and Run thefts declined from 984 in 2022 to 663 in 2023. The reduction in the use
of face masks, which had become more prevalent as a result of Covid, has made it more difficult for
criminals to disguise themselves with masks. 

4. While the number of crimes requiring minimal skills by criminals and resulting in relatively small
losses declined in 2023, the increase in dollar losses can be attributed to highly professional
criminals and organized gangs carrying out high-dollar crimes resulting in large losses.

5. The number of off-premises crimes reported to JSA increased from 65 in 2022 to 100 in 2023.
Dollar losses from off-premises crimes reported to JSA in 2023 was $40.4 million, which
represented an increase of 112.6% from $19.0 million in losses reported in 2022.

CHARLOTTE, NC – GRAB AND RUN

On 04/21/24, at 5:30 p.m. a subject entered a jewelry store and asked to see several diamond fashion rings to compare them. An employee mentioned she is only able to show one and held the ring on her finger to show the subject. The subject then asked if the necklaces in the corner cabinet came together, then asked if he is able to try on the diamond ring that the employee was holding. When the subject was presented with the ring, he ran away with it, holding up his pants as he ran.

Subject Description: Male, Black, 20 years old, wearing a black Ralph Lauren hoodie with a bear on the front, ripped jeans, black and white tennis shoes, and white framed dark sunglasses that he dropped to his mouth while talking to the employee.

GRAB AND RUN – LAFAYETTE, LA

On 4/9/2024, at 2:00 p.m., a subject entered a jewelry store and asked to see a gold chain. Chains were shown to the subject and she selected one to purchase. The subject asked to see a pendant and a ring as well. After she selected the items she wanted, the subject asked to try them on together to see how they matched. When the subject was in possession of all three items, she fled from the store. She got into a white RAV4 with no license plates and left the area. Lafayette Police responded to investigate the incident.

WICHITA, KS – VIOLENT ROBBERY

On 4/8/2024, at approximately 4:45 p.m., three male subjects entered a jewelry store under the pretense of looking at gold chains. The male sales associate greeted the group and began to show them a chain. While the case was open for the associate to retrieve a second chain the first suspect went around the counter and put the associate in a choke hold as the other two suspects grabbed multiple items out of the case. The associate complied and put his hands up trying to back away and the suspect holding
him put his hand on his waist line implying that he had a weapon on him.

When the two suspects started to flee, the suspect holding the associate let him go and grabbed more merchandise before following the other two. They encountered a security guard as they were running out, because the store manager had already texted security to do a walk-by when the group entered. The security guard tried to use a pepper spray on the group and follow them, the guard was punched by the suspects. The security guard said the subjects fled in a older white 4 door car.
