Grab and Run Thief

Cobb County, GA- 3 Accused of Robbing Cumberland Mall Jewelry Kiosk.

Cobb County, GA– October 30, 2024 – Joshua Christopher Gregory, 19, of Atlanta; Terrence Phillip-Pendleman Johnson, 25, of Atlanta; and De’Mon Quotez Renard Waller, 23, of Forest Park, are accused of stealing six chains worth $36,000 from Diamond Treasure by sudden snatching on Oct. 1 at 7:09 p.m. at Cumberland Mall, according to arrest warrants from the Cobb County Police Department.

Police were informed by mall security that a vehicle used in a robbery at the mall the day before was there again. Police located the vehicle in the parking garage and saw multiple males running for it. Police were able to detain three of the four males involved, according to the warrants.

After securing the scene, police spoke to the store clerk and watched footage of the incident. Gregory and an unidentified male are accused of walking into the mall together and going to the second-floor jewelry kiosk. Gregory is accused of acting as a lookout, lingering around the kiosk and at one point appears to reach over the counter while the clerk was occupied by his accomplice. When the six chains are snatched, both men ran for the exit fleeing toward the getaway vehicle, according to the warrants.

Johnson is accused of acting as a lookout that stayed on the first floor, lingering just beneath the kiosk. Once the jewelry was stolen, he fled in the same direction. Waller is accused of waiting in the running vehicle, which was backed into a parking stall near a mall entrance. The males were entering the vehicle when police boxed the vehicle in, according to the warrants.

Gregory, Johnson and Waller are all charged with robbery snatch. All three were arrested on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, according to jail records.

Gregory, Johnson and Waller all remain in custody without bond. Waller also has a hold from the Atlanta Police Department.

Jewelers Warned of Wave of “Ocean’s Eleven” Burglaries

September 18, 2024 – New York, NY

Howard Stone, vice president of global risk services and analytics for Jewelers Mutual, says the insurer started noticing an uptick in burglaries in June. “It doesn’t appear like they’re stopping,” he says.

Most of the thefts follow similar patterns. They generally occur on weekends. The gang members sometimes dress up as construction workers to avoid suspicion. They often come equipped with cellphone and Wi-Fi blockers. They usually cut the store’s power cables, and will sometimes wait for hours until the alarm’s backup battery runs out. On occasion, they’ll mount hunting cameras on the store, which act as motion sensors, to see if anyone’s coming.

The gangs are generally well prepared before they strike, gathering extensive intelligence about their targets.

“They usually roll into town for a week and do surveillance,” Guginsky says. “They scout out the store, follow the jeweler home. They often send someone in the store during business hours, with a camera on their hat and their shirt, so they have a sense of the layout.”

Even though they have similar M.O.’s, multiple crews are committing these thefts, Guginsky says.

“They’re all from South America and they are somewhat in communication,” he says. “But it’s a loose-knit group. It’s not like there’s a [mob boss] John Gotti coordinating everything.”

Guginsky notes that these gangs can function only when “jewelers are buying this stolen property.” (Fencing is, of course, a crime.)

To prevent burglaries, the JSA and Jewelers Mutual recommend jewelers take the following steps:

  • Be aware of any suspicious customers or people who could be casing the store or following you. If you suspect someone is targeting your store, report it to both the JSA and local law enforcement. Keep a logbook that notes the time and date of suspicious activities.
  • Regularly test security alarms and cameras.
  • Review and update your emergency contact list, and ensure every person on this list clearly understands their role. Emergency contacts should be available even on weekends and holidays.
  • Jewelers should notify the authorities about all alarm signals, including notices of communication errors or power interruptions. (Unexplained power cuts or cellphone outages are considered red flags.) Following an alarm, retailers shouldn’t enter the store alone but should wait for a police escort.
  • TL 15×6– and TL 30×6-rated safes are no longer considered adequate protection from burglars. The JSA recommends TRTL 30×6–rated safes.
  • Don’t position a safe on an outside wall or the wall of a neighboring office or store. That could enable burglars to penetrate the safe without entering the store.
  • Don’t leave merchandise—even inexpensive merchandise—in showcases at night. Either lock it in the safe or find another way to keep it out of sight.
  • Forge relationships with local law enforcement and mall security. Have them tour your store and identify potential vulnerabilities.

Man sentenced to 23 years in prison for robbery of Costa Mesa jeweler

Gavel

October 4, 2024 – Costa Mesa, CA – A 30-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 23 years in prison for his part in kidnapping and robbing a jeweler in Costa Mesa and attempting to kidnap a jeweler in Yorba Linda nearly five years ago.

Marvin Antoine Brown, who pleaded guilty in April, was given credit for about five years in custody, according to his attorney Joel Garson. Co-defendant Cedrick Emillion Reynolds, 33, who also pleaded guilty in April, was also sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Co-defendant Leonard Antonyeo Berry, 35, also pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted kidnapping to commit a robbery, kidnapping for a robbery, torture, robbery, false imprisonment and battery, all felonies, and admitted sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a gun and inflicting great bodily injury on a victim.

Berry accepted a plea deal from Orange County Superior Court Judge Larry Yellin. He had 1,811 days credit for time behind bars awaiting trial.

The three were charged in connection with abductions Nov. 30, 2019, in Yorba Linda and Dec. 4, 2019, in Costa Mesa.

The three and a fourth unknown suspect drove from San Bernardino to Yorba Linda in Reynolds’ Toyota Camry on Nov. 30, 2019, prosecutors said in court papers. They parked outside of a jewelry store owner’s home and when he arrived home, two of the defendants grabbed him and attempted to pull him back into his Audi.

The fourth suspect jumped into the driver’s seat, but when the victim “screamed and fought” for a minute the four suspects fled, prosecutors said.

The victim owned the Watch and Wares store at 40 Plaza Square in Orange, prosecutors said. The victim found a GPS tracking device on his car on July 9, 2019, that was bought by Berry.

Four days after that attempted kidnapping, another jewelry store owner was targeted by the defendants, prosecutors said. The owner of Diamond and Jewelry Exchange at 1808 Newport Blvd. in Costa Mesa was closing up shop when two men got out of Reynolds’ car and assaulted the victim.

The men stuffed the victim in the car, bound him with duct tape and drove off before beating him “severely over the course of the next few hours,” prosecutors said.

The victim was driven to 2040 E. Dyer Road in Santa Ana, where he was dumped with no shirt and duct-taped around his legs, prosecutors said. His attackers took his blue Submariner Rolex watch worth about $20,000 and a gold chain worth about $27,000 as well as a gold ring and some diamonds.

A tow truck driver found the victim about 11 p.m. He was taken to an area hospital and treated for a fractured jaw, broken orbital sockets, multiple rib fractures, a cut on his liver and significant bruising all over his body, prosecutors said.

October 4, 2024 – Walnut Creek, CA – The Walnut Creek Police Department is investigating a bold jewelry store robbery on the 1300 block of N. Main St. shortly before 5 p.m. yesterday. Officers arrived on the scene within two minutes of the initial call. However, their prompt response was not quick enough to apprehend the culprits. Witnesses described the suspects to the police, depicting them as males clad in sweatshirts, gloves, and face coverings to conceal their identities.
